...Dear Gawd,
Where do you get em and WHY did you have to send em all to Amigaland ???

hi Franko So I'm assuming you have made another bet with a different friend this time around

You assumed wrongly this time Kix300r...

I actually only came (or rather was asked to come) here to reply to one post in "The MooBunny" thread and fully expected to be banned after I posted that reply...

For some strange reason though there seems to be a distinct lack of Mods round here, perhaps they're back in the nuthouse or just having a wee laugh themselves at this wee slice of entertainment but whatever the case I'm sure one will be along soon enough to either snip certain posts and accounts in this thread or better still Nuke it from orbit, just to be sure...

Anywhoo, was just passing some time while awaiting execution and thought I'd partake in a wee exchange of views while waiting, so with that I'll say ta ta, toodle pip, cheerio etc... as I think all that there is to be said on this subject has been said (once again, yet again) and I'm off to do something a tad more interesting and more productive like watching paint dry or taking part in the weekly debate on YouTube about why Heavy Metal & Rap are Crap and Ska is Teh only REAL muic...

Awe Ra Best to one and all and I maybe, just maybe be back in another guise next time I get the call that says "Oi Franko, Wayne Hunts been talking about you on AW.net again"...

(I'm sure I can hear the faint sound of air raid sirens in the distance)....

Linux is not primary objective for both manufacturers and customers.

So why porting Linux? If you want to check if the hardware is working, you don't need to port an entire o.s.: a simple "Hello, boot" is enough.

Not only that. You forgot the >2GB memory, the graphic cards, and the "XCore" coprocessor (which is just a "bonbonnière").

All these are supported (sort of).

Seriously pavlor, do you think that we can even talk about a "good enough" support?

The so called "64-bit support" is disgraceful. I mean, it's like rolling back the time to the 8-bit home computer age, where you needed the bank switching technique to overcome the 64KB address space limit.

I don't know about you, but I recall the jokes and mockeries against the PC users because they were stick with the so called "segmented memory", because that was the only way for 8086 applications (DOS dominate at the time and it used only 8086 mode, even with 80286 and 80386 machines) to use memory: by splitting the 1MB address space in 64KB chunks (segments). Compared to our beloved Amiga machines, with their fully linear address space, PCs resembled like archaic (and costly) toys.

Now take a look at the so called "64-bit support" which will be introduced in the next AmigaOS4 version: it's even worse the 8086 segments! At least with the segments you don't have to ask the o.s. to gently map some memory on some address with an handle: you load the segment and then immediately access to the 64KB bank (using the offset). The proposed solution works like to the most infamous (very old) PC expanded memory: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expanded_memory

How can an amigan feels for such horrible hack? I cannot even call it "regression": it's involution! Unacceptable for an amigan.

Regarding the graphic cards, do you know of any support for the tessellation, for example? Do they support the video hardware acceleration for decoding and/or encoding (MPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264)? HDMI audio? In general, what features of a common graphic cards are enabled?

Finally, the XCore is a useless chip, unless you plan to use it for controlling your christmas tree. When I started studying its architecture manual, I tried to make some deductions based on the available information, and I was really too much optimistic. I though about a theoretical 200MB/s of transfer rate, whereas in reality the chip has only 15 or 30MB/s (I don't remember correctly now).

And I cannot imagine it's latency also, which should be high. That plus the 128KB of local memory available for the XCore, makes this chip absolutely ridiculous and useless.

You can imagine why it was included in the X1000: just to deceive amigans that the machine "has coprocessors!!!", like the Amigas. But on our (at least mine ) Amigas, coprocessors were there to offload some CPU work, because they were able to do it MUCH BETTER. They were really, really useful, and they were squeeze like lemons...

OK, I think it's enough and you got the point, right?

Does it run on Amigas?

Yes. Did you even hear about Amiga 1200?

Yes, I had one, and I'm pretty sure that AmigaOS4 didn't run on it. Guess why.

Aargh what of waste of energy in these threads...

If people are not satisfied with current Amigan offerings they should focus on improving things or go away.

Depends on who you ask. People who aren't interested in AOS4 probably aren't going to care at all.

@realize

I saw him help someone in another thread.

But why the outburst, I haven't seen him reply in here for ages?

I would agree a thread dedicated to him was a bit over the top.
