Jesus F. Christ,

what's the point of this obnoxious banter on instruction cycles, picoseconds, vperm, vcpu, xrks, xwerlwlwlslfs and on and on and on,

when ultimately the thing will be an underpowered, overpriced black brick that looks like a Toshiba notebook from the mid 90s?

To claim that it's underpowered you have to discuss about performance, which is what we were doing.

Ok - but you endlessly, painstakingly argue about tiny performance details with barely perceivable effects on the end user - ignoring that no matter what, you are discussing a dead platform that would remain under powered even if you mounted it on a space rocket.

Two doctors quarreling over a corpse arguing on single cells with a microscope. Ok docs, great science there, but the guy is dead stiff anyway so what's the point.

Funny thing, this notebook, if it ever comes out, will be faster than X5000/40. Really bad timing by A-eon to have chosen the e5500 core before e6500 was available in quantity.

Sounds like a great reason for it to support Amiga OS4! Man, I'd love a notebook Amiga with a speed something close to an X1000.....that would be awesome.

Noone is forcing you to follow discussions you're not interested in. At least I hope, for your sake, that noone is actually forcing you to read all these posts that don't interest you. In a thread with a topic that doesn't interest you.

It's been over 7 years but they now have everything ready to produce and test the prototype boards.

@amigagr

My work laptop I got in 2015 (it was not new), PC see stores right now in 2022 is similar to the specs, yes sure gotten more efficient, but beyond that, we kind hit a accepted speed, where adding more speed does do a lot, we are at stagnation, when it comes to CPU, RAM, HD.

Anyhow, I think now right time to get laptop, as windows 11 needs a spy chip, you get windows 10 laptop at dumping / discount prices.

@NutsAboutAmiga truth is i would like the idea of a ppc laptop running amigaos.
i have a power book from 2005 but the macos is outdated and the morphos
doesn't drive me crazy, so I just have it completely useless.

Amazing perseverance! It's a shame it may take another 7 years to have AmigaOS/System 54 ported to it if ever!

It needs no "spy" chip, rather a TPM module (which is something completely different).

The T2080 is basically a P5020 with Altivec and more CPU cores. I dout it will take much to get the X5000 kernel running on a T2080.

Assuming USB 2 and network are the same on both chips, they can both be checked off on the list of essential drivers.

Enhancer already contains drivers for compatible Radeon video cards.

geen_naam made a driver compatible with the onboard audio and his driver for NVME storage is sat in the uploads section of OS4 Depot as I type this.

Everything required for OS4 to be usable on the OPN is pretty much already in place.

The bigger question are over whether the hardware actually becomes available to buy and how horrendous the price will be.

You'd still need basic pwr-management and support for whatever WIFI chip is in there to get it useable as a laptop.

Plus small stuff trackpad support and maybe multimonitor support (assuming there is an output for an external monitor).

AFAIK none of the exist for OS4 atm.

Likely in political discussions over a software agreement. But OS4 isn't guaranteed to run on it since it isn't an OS4 laptop. It's specifically designed to run Linux and only Linux so if OS4 happens to be ported it only a lucky accident.

Does it really? My X1000 Ethernet chip is unsupported so to use it as a desktop I need to plug in a supported Ethernet card. Plus OS4 Internet still has no support for Wifi so they might leave it as unsupported as well.

I hate track pads so if it doesn't work there's always a mouse.

I hope they include a bunch of PCIe slots inside and space for PCI to PCIe cause OS4 will need it to work!

True.

I've been using a USB keyboard with trackpad with AmigaOS 4 without any trouble. It works just fine with the USB HID driver. If the laptop's keyboard & trackpad use USB to connect to the motherboard, then this won't be a problem.

Existing drivers can clone the screen on multiple outputs (after a reboot, because there's no hot-plug detection). That's enough to make the external monitor output usable. True multi-monitor support would be great, though.

A bigger question is whether the drivers need tweaking to support a mobile GPU with LCD screen. The LCD panel will likely be connected via eDP, (embedded DisplayPort) or an older LDVS interface. Both of those would need extra work to get up and running.

AFAIK, OS4 has two wifi drivers, such as this one. Having a laptop should provide the motivation to get more serious about wireless networking...

Yes and they are third party. I've not tested them so don't know if they include an installer or setup utility that lets you chose an SSID through a GUI. But in OS4 itself it has no support for WiFi. Roadshow would need updating and would need updates to Wizard and Internet so that WiFi can be configured with the GUI. But, at present, it also needs a few things fixed such as detecting and dealing with cable out. This would likely need a SANA III but Roadshow cannot deal with broken connections and cannot shut itself down without a reboot in most cases.
