@MEGA_RJ_MICAL

"MEGA A MARTYR", I like the phonetics of it.
Rolls off the tongue. At least in my Australian accents.

Hi @wajdy!

And thanks! Guess I don't have any choice but to use Twitter (I contacted Joakim there... )

Happy holidays everyone!

Hi @MEGA_RJ_MICAL!

Please don't get put down!

To paraphrase Beatrice Evelyn Hall, who was thinking of our dear friend François-Marie Arouet: "I sometimes disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"!

Happy holidays all!

@tygre

I answered on Twitter, but I’ll add it here too: to say I’m working on it would be an exaggeration. But I haven’t totally abandoned it.

Digging out a 5 year old thread about a long dead project deserves an abuse point for grave robbery.

@OneTimer1

The problem with this project, is think he port like 3 or 4 different Java engines, end done on etch about 10%, If had focus on one just one might have had Java 40-50% done now.

I do sometime wonder if other operating systems and dependences from Linux/windows/macos world sometime overcomplicates the work, because you can’t see the scope of the project when you start working on it.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Nah, not really. There was the original Jamiga VM made by others (especially for Amiga) that I simply compiled and added some stuff to. Then I found JamVM which I ported, and also released, supporting GNU classpath, meaning Java 1.5. And that’s about what I’ve done. But I’d say there’s like 30-40% Java 1.5 on AmigaOS.

GNU Classpath has practically ended development since OpenJDK. So nothing above 1.5 will ever materialise in GNU classpath.

To go forward, JamVM has support for OpenJDK 8. But that’s it. So instead I’m focusing on OpenJDK 15/16, with the HotSpot VM.

@jaokim

Any thoughts about graal for thr vm part, to get jit for more interpreted languages, as an alternative to jam or hotspot?

@billt

Well, I’ve been thinking GraalVM would be nice, however it’s built on HotSpot, so we’d need that either way. But, yes, GraalVM would be interesting.
In theory you could use it as a javascript interpreter with JIT for a browser. However, I think it’s unlikely such a browser exists. One does initially think it’d be possible to just change what’s ever in odyssey. But it’s rarely that plug-and-playable.

The main issue is the build environment.

Which gcc version is supported? Should I use newlib or clib2? Choose either one and you’ll most likely find one thing in clib2 that isn’t in newlib and vice versa, or exists in a semi-supported way. So, question arise; should I patch for clib2 or newlib, should I port this library I need myself, or should I try to contribute to either project?

Nice to see that you are at Oracle jaokim, keep up the good work.

Anyway, who cares about that MEGA_TROLL, his opinions are as stupid and obsolete as the technology he advocates.

At one time we've all been to the zoo, haven't we? And what text was displayed all around? It was something in the vein of:

"Please, don't feed the monkies!"

I wish you all a good, healthy and prosperous 20201! And as the Irish proverb goes: "May all your ups and downs in life be between the sheets!".

Classy.
After all, we live in an era where Trump can be president of a major power.
