Is there anything to the rumours that this contains (probably outdated/incomplete) AmigaOS*4* source code?

Quote:
Apparently the source code is really related to Amiga OS. The tar file name refers to OS 3.1 but folders from the source code refers to version 4, which could mean the source code is pretty much up to date.

That would be even more interesting...

Wasn´t able to download it, but 150 MB for such old sources doesn´t sound right. However, it may be V40 (OS3.1) or even foundation for first OS4 incarnation (Commodore´s RTG).

No, this is completely bogus. The contents of the leaked archive are more than 21 years old. The material in the archive is, if you will, a precursor to AmigaOS 4, which is built on top of the AmigaOS 3.1 code. As far as I know the contents of this leaked archive do not even contain a complete copy of the AmigaOS 3.1.

What about that alleged "version 4" claim in the article? Beats me.

The contents of the leaked archive refer to version 40, which is the internal version number of what eventually shipped as Workbench/Kickstart 3.1 in 1994. Version 39 was Kickstart/Workbench 3.0, version 38 was Workbench 2.1, and version 37 was Kickstart/Workbench 2.04, version 34 was Workbench 1.3.

AmigaOS 4 currently bears version number 53. The source code is significantly larger than 540 MBytes. It's not 21 years old.

@olsen

Thanks for clarification. So 3.1 sources are so big (500+ MB)?

No, the actual AmigaOS 3.1 source code used in production is much shorter (around 50-60 MBytes total).

This leaked archive contains both a lot of data that is not part of the AmigaOS 3.1 source code, as well as change history data which chronicles the evolution of AmigaOS 3.1 back to the Kickstart/Workbench 1.3 days.

@olsen

Yeah too bad that Andy is not part of the AmigaOS 4.x team.

@kamelit0

Many years ago, 3.1 sources might have been useful to port to Coldfire, but now I see no point.

First, this story was carried on more than just OSNews. As with C= smartphone, CUSA, and everything else over the years...an initial error in reporting was merely carried from one site to the next with no one doing any research.

The source of the error itself? I believe it to be a misunderstanding concerning version numbers of 3.x, as silly as that might sound. Perhaps version "40" itself was the culprit.

off-topic: thank you for all your additional input regarding history both here and on eab.

@amigang

There is a rumour - I have no idea how true it is, but it says that in the days of the Commodore (or was it Escom?) failure, Petro was handing out CDs of the source code to anyone who wanted one (presumably in an effort to prevent the code from being lost for ever). I don't know how that fits into the timeline.

The rumour is that this is how the MorphOS guys (allegedly) got hold of the AmigaOS source code.

As I said, I have no idea if it is true, but several people would swear that it is. That is why Some People still claim that MorphOS is built on stolen code.

Don't blame me, I don't even work here.

ok, so I can't confirm it's him, so let's not jump to conclusions:

Anybody in possession of this stolen source-code will face legal action and the same applies to anybody distributing or making this material available.

CEASE AND DESIST from such actions or you will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

@tonyw

This source code leak pre-dates the source code that was received by Escom so such rumours are irrelevant here.

@tonyw

why did the MorphOS devs use Aros code then?

these people who would swear that, do they have ever shown any evidence for such claims? If they had any they would have used that against MorphOS long time ago. If it is only based on "believings" it would be better if they keep it for themselves.

He is obliged to by 2009 Settlement Agreement. However, I think Cloanto should take legal steps first, it is its property after all.

obliged? Are you serious? By whom? You mean AmigaInc would sue him if he not would do that?

next to naming it is the only selling point for AmigaOS to be the only one using original codes. If codes would be general available and useable they would loose this.

I very much doubt it is Ben, but I may be wrong.

Somehow it doesn't sound like him, and clicking on his name (in "his" post) actually brings you to the website of the lawfirm he works at, a connection Ben as always tried to ... avoid. Sounds more like someone wanting to impersonate him and it wasn't me

But I may be wrong

Other than that:

Happy New Year to all !
