@TRIPOS

Never used workbench much on Amiga500, workbench used too much memory, the workbench disk was more of curiosity, back in Amiga 500 days it was 99% about AmigaDOS and the Kickstart. Workbench was not necessary, and something you most of the time tried to avoid workbench. Mostly I used utility disk back then, and this util disk most of the time only needed kickstart rom, and a basic AmigaDOS shell (not even all commands).

Hyperion did not released a new workbench, they only released a new Kickstart for some fixes for Amiga 600.

Workbench is the desktop environment, and secondly calling AmigaOS is as silly as calling Linux for X11.

X11 is not Linux, X11 needs Linux to run, Linux does not need X11.

In the same way Workbench need a Kickstart to run, and Workbench also needs AmigaDOS, this things can't be separated.

Running directory opus in workbench mode does not mean that it replace kickstart or AmigaDOS, Directory Opus 5 only replaced desktop system.

Amiga OS is collection of different components; workbench is just a part of it.

Amiga 500 or Amiga 600 this hardware components, Amiga 500 is not need for worknech, you can run workbench on other hardware too like Draco, that has different rom then normal Amiga models.

@TRIPOS

Oh no not again...

even Hyperion is using "Workbench" mark literally everywhere when they are selling their parallel Workbench 3.1 product:

In case of Hyperion "Workbench" is only part of the OS as they sell also "Kickstart". It is long time Amiga tradition to call ROM based parts "Kickstart" and disk based parts "Workbench", although Workbench is usually in the ROM (except A4000T of course).

Name of the OS was not set until OS3.1 era. There were many terms describing the OS - notably AmigaDOS (favourite of AmigaWorld magazine) and Workbench. These discussion were there at least since 1986 - by words of leading Amiga OS developer:

"let's discuss the misuse of the term AmigaDos to describe the
entire Amiga OS. That should be interesting, yea, that's the ticket."

@Rob

Thanks for the info about AmigaOne models.

I learned that SAM460 has 266 MHz bus with DDR2 RAM up to 533 MHz.

Tabor has a clear advantage here with 400 MHz bus and 800 MHz DDR3 RAM when constant real data flow starts, not short test benchmark.

Only X1000 and X5000 has faster bus (900/800 MHz). X5000 can accept 1333/1600 MHz DDR3.

What is the main bus speed on SAM460 and Eyetech AmigsOne models?

The AmigaOne models use SDR RAM and bus speed is 133Mhz although some have been clocked down to 100Mhz by the user. The AGP bus is 66Mhz but the RadeonHD (Still nobody seems to have tested a Southern Islands based card) cards only work in the 33Mhz PCI slots.
