Price is not cheap, but none of the old Zorro slot video cards are cheap either, and this is new hardware with better usability, since it has HDMI. The SD card reader is also a bonus.

Has anyone done any performance testing comparisons of this card, compared to the older Amiga video cards?

Also, does this card only provide 4mb VRAM when used in a Zorro2 slot Amiga?

Great to see people still developing new hardware for Classic Amiga computers!

@BoingBear

Bump!

Can anyone who owns one of these new video cards answer my questions regarding how much VRAM this card provides, when installed in a Zorro2 slot A2000, instead of the 32mb VRAM provided when installed in an A3000 or A4000, and my 2nd question about performance, when compared to older Amiga video cards, like the Picasso2, Picasso4, or Cybergraphx cards?

4MB in Zorro2 modes according to the website, benchmarks are on A1k.org:

Incredible! Very interesting indeed to see new Zorro hardware being released.

Can someone make a YouTube video of it being put through it's paces?

It would be great to see it slotted into one of the machines as well to see how it would look with other expansions around it.

Q!

"Very Interesting", .... yes, I would agree.

"Incredible", ....... not really, at least not yet, since the performance is considerably slower than the older video cards. But this is still an great thing to see as a project, with the potential for improvement in the future. FPGA's keep getting faster and cheaper all the time, and it appears that the person who created this card can still make many improvements to his design and the code he is loading into the FPGA, so perhaps he will be successful in surpassing the performance of the older Amiga video cards, if that is his goal.

Edit: I don't know if this project is practical, or just an exercise to see if it could be done, as it seems that to modify this project to make it faster than other off the shelf video cards that can be adapted for use in old Amiga computers might be impossible. Still, I am impressed by the skill and knowledge of the cards creator.

new firmware out today!

get V1.7 here: http://mntmn.com/va2000/

for me this version doesn't find my x-syrf-100 again but at least it boots into Workbench again...only version that works and doesn't interfere with my X-Surgf-100 is v1.4 for some reason ? looking forward to next update...

@klapdeur

Using an FPGA is an interesting idea. But I wonder if it would have been easier to use an existing ASIC chip? Yes it would need drivers. But there is always VESA mode.

I have a 1280x1024 monitor which is considered old, or "short screen" I suppose. I'd like at least 1280x1024 in 24-bit for a new card. Given he is using an FPGA in an A2000 it looks like he has tripped into Vampire territory there.

SD is interesting idea. Be good if USB was usable as well. But I would expect an Amiga card to be upgradable from an Amiga like they were in the past.

One thing I can't see is if it has a built in scan doubler for native modes.

Soooooo been trying to get hold of MNT (Lukas) for quite some time now to see if we can get screen dragging with new P96 and OS3.1.4/3.2 and finally got a response from their official MNT forum https://community.mnt.re/ and the response is:

"Hi, unfortunately we don’t have any resources to work on VA2000 firmware at the moment. But the firmware and drivers are completely open source, so anyone competent in Verilog and C could add such functionality."

..so any fellow VA2000 users here that are competent in Verilog and C

If Gunnar from the Vampire team wants their SAGA graphics enhancements to get a wider audience and acceptance in more projects, I would think that he should approach the makers of this video card to see if SAGA could be included in the FPGA of this video card, on top of the regular P96 drivers. Or am I misunderstanding how all of this works?

@Hypex

It is easier to do new drivers since Jens bought p96.

Fpga to duplicate an already supported chip saves driver work, but needs a good duplicate of the original chip...

I dream of somethingike a Zynq or even an Ultrascale+ with hardwired gpu and other peripherals to hook up... would also make an interesting vampire cpu card, 68k, peripherals galore, not sure what I would do with the arm though...

How would you map the address space of the existing native chipset to the SAGA chipset on the zorro bus, so that software would use SAGA instead of OCS/ECS/AGA?
