Funny how everyone who tries to address a wider target audience makes every effort to avoid the word "Amiga" or "AmigaOS" _________________ The Rear Window blog

The community perhaps, but considering the fact that AmigaOS-compatible machines are about the only thing ACube can seriously claim to be on their track record, it's interesting to see there's no mention of it _________________ The Rear Window blog

They probably still think about a way to plug a pci network card into a laptop, to check if a port is possible. :)
Fun aside. A Laptop project needs alot of drivers a desktop system does not require. It is alot of work. I wonder who outside the amiga audience would be interested in an underpowered laptop system that probably would be 3 times more expensive as a modern apple laptop. |

The T2080 isn't really underpowered, nor is it expensive. |

I thought AEON may be interested as well. Without any collaboration the Tabor will be going up against the Sam460. So they need a good backup plan. |

The project did start without any Amiga fans in the mix, by some Linux fans in Italy. They may have got together with Acube due to close proximity there. Why these Italian Linux fans were interested in PPC is an interesting question, I'm not sure we've seen an answer about that. but if they can make something happen, then there is obvious potential for we AmigaOS fans who are currently stuck on PPC. _________________ All glory to the Hypnotoad! |

| @Trixie I think it's probably because of general public perception of Amiga as a retro only platform. Makes you wonder about the real value of the Amiga trademark...

Same can be said about about the SoC used in the X5000, but it still ended up at 1600€ and the PC you could buy for that money will for sure make it look underpowered.
Even if that T2080 could be bought for 1$, you'd still end up with >1000 Laptop._________________ - We don't need good ideas, we haven't run out on bad ones yet - blame Canada |

They're probably literate IT people that know a thing or two about hardware. One example I've seen recently was some devs complaining on an embedded dev forum (I'm just a hobby C dev with no project completed BTW, so not claiming the validity of the information...) about the registers on the ARM platform and how limited and mediocre it was. IRC it was related to the SDK for lower end chips advising users to only use 4 registers max per function call!!! Even the old MC680000 was much better in this regard and had a very user friendly instruction set.

Single core performance is too low by today standards (6.86 SpecInt2006 for 1.666 GHz T4240). SoC itself may be not expensive, but price of final laptop will be certainly prohibitive.
However, if they get this under 1000 EUR with OS4, I will gladly pay for another door-stop. |

the price? just imagine the weight of that "final laptop" (not to mention it will ever reach an alpha stage after years and years this and similar project anouncements have been linked to), a bulky housing it might find (probably along with an external car battery) and a lack of driver support with no option for extention cards, in case it has actually been made close to functionable. thats some examples of "prohibitive".Last edited by wawa on 08-Feb-2017 at 05:13 PM.

We've been burnt by promises of the LimeBook AmigaOS port before. The Alice will be the sensible short term solution to this laptop problem. Maybe this ACube co-developed laptop could be supported by AmigaOS circa 2020? _________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." Actually people at PowerPC notebook team are focused in revitalize PPC platform but they are aimed mainly at using OPEN Operating Systems.
They asked ACube for designing and manufacturing as they have tech skills and necessary Know-How in PPC platform hardware.
Amiga is not their primary target but they welcome any help to revitalize PPC as they think this platform has still things to say to the world.
They do not believe in "closed" i.e. proprietary systems so nor AmigaOS neither MorphOS are in their aim. Maybe AROS in its PPC version could be directly supported by them.
However they will release as much as possible charts and design references to make the PPC laptop free to being built by anyone who want manifacturing it, and in the same time release as much as possible drivers, but...
...Do not expect they will prefer Amiga more than other technology and do not expect low prices tough. The guys at PPC notebook org believe in sustainability and labour rights so they prefer to manifacture in Europe rather than China.
Batches of motherboard produced by ACube will be property of ACube and they will decide price for final customer.
If Hyperion and MorphOS are interested in developing versions of their Amiga Operating Systems (AOS and MOS) they will receive all the help they need. Last edited by Raffaele on 08-Feb-2017 at 06:10 PM. Last edited by Raffaele on 08-Feb-2017 at 06:07 PM.
