Even if that would be true - the most important aspect of a GUI is consistency - all applications should behave the same way. And the LibreOffice menu not being a native menu has nothing to do with ergonomics, it's just cheaper this way. And it's not just about the location: think of keyboard shortcuts, or the ability to multi-select that Amiga menus give you.

Can't agree here. For me as LO user it is more important consistency of LO UI and shortcuts over Amiga style.

actually on genuine amiga there were a lot of inconsistent guis not following the style guide.

Exactly - it was a horrible mess.

i liked that. had some unique flair.

I once (somewhere in the late nineties) counted how many different ways there were on my system to answer a simple "yes/no?" requester with the keyboard: I counted seven different methods (Amiga-V/B, Escape+Enter, "Y" and "N", Tab+Enter etc.) - and none of them worked on all requesters.

That's the kind of stuff you want to work uniformly across the board. If somebody feels the urgent need to paint a pink flower in the top right corner of his GUI, fine with me. But Control-C for 'copy to clipboard' is a no-go.

A-EON would be foolish to invest heaps of money into something that every Tom, Jack and Harry will then be able to compile for themselves.

It is questionable. Depends of what are A-EON's priorities. In case they would like to bring more people to their platform, good browser and office suite are a must. And these apps are free on most other systems these days...

You mean like the Linux version of LibreOffice, that's (probably) faster, more up-to-date and more feature complete the the Amiga port and can be installed on any AmigaOne running Linux?

Having LibreOffice would be a great, that's for sure. But let's not pretend the fact it's a commercial effort is a good thing. It's not.

@cgutjahr

Hmm, use Libre Office under OS4 and pay for it, use it under Linux and get it for free, or keep paying Microsoft $10 a month for the use of Office365 on several PCs?

This is frighteningly close to the situation that existed when the legacy hardware was current.

Even though I support NG development and use the stuff, I still default to a PC for some packages because they are better developed and supported (thanks to the enormous user base for PCs).

i beg to differ. if there was an existing developer or developers who were interested in porting libreoffice to modern amigas, then, terrific. but there isn't. there is only one effort, and the people involved need to eat. they need to be paid for their time, just like a great many contributors to libreoffice itself are. are you willing to pay them? no? well, then this is the best way forward.

and since the source will be available to all who have a binary copy, you can fork it and release it for free if you'd like. it'd be a jerk move, but that hasn't stopped folks before.

"not a good thing" and "still the best way forward" do not contradict each other. We actually agree: "it's a crappy solution, but it's the best one we have".

Is that an assumption, or did you hear somebody say that? They are perfectly fine to do what they originally wanted to do with Timberwolf: Only release the original code (including any modifications they made to it), but keep their new code to themselves. It's a bit more complicated than that, but that's basically what they could do - and what everybody is expecting them to do.

Is there another option available? Like, someone will come and port LibreOffice to OS4 as a non-commercial effort? Fat chance, I'd say.

Yes it is surely a good thing to have no software than to have to pay for software. A lack of software is what sells computers and nobody in their right mind would want to get into a platform that actually has applications that allow them to do useful things.

Agreed. But think about it like this: ten years ago, Thomas Frieden was trying to kickstart an effort to port OpenOffice for free with a bunch of volunteers. Now he's only doing it because he's getting paid good money.

That's the "not good news" part: The very people who always insisted on separate, custom PPC hardware because... reasons, who have successfully reduced the OS4 community to a mere fraction of what it used to be, who walk around behind the scenes, claiming they are owed an apology for Timberwolf are now charging you for stuff they once regarded as their hobby.

:Dancing banana:

Again, if this results in a usable, properly supported port for a sane price: I'm all for it. But I don't see a reason to get excited.

It is nice to so comercial effort with Open Office.

Will bought it fo sure.

Just wondering why not Calligra suite? It has prety much same funtionality than OO has, but it should be much easier Project? Only things wich are missing from depencies are some kde libraries. With some googling seems that Kasie has had some effort for them?

Yes: it's really foolish to invest in open source... It's so bad to be opened in 2017 ;)

Wordworth 4 SE it was, a limited version. But the upgrade to WW 5 was cheap, and well worth the money. I wrote all of my essays including the Master's thesis in it

"Good money" is relative, but subsidizing the development effort should depersonalize the project and ensure that A-EON maintains control.

Most of us are familiar with the backstory - the last thing we need is more caterwauling.
