If it reaches market and is a good price then I'll buy it. Until then it's a work in progress and the risks to those supporting the project are not insignificant! My understanding is that the backers money will be swallowed up by R&D whether this makes it to market or not _________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." The money will go to R&D for the PPC platform regardless. This is clearly visible on the donation campaign page and we hope everyone who donates understands the potential risk. |

Actually I didn't know that QEMU could emulate a Sam460. I thought the AmigaOne would be the first to be emulated and that it was more likely to emulate a Pegasos. They must have updated the firmware options because it used to be stuck at OpenFirmware in order to emulate a Mac.
This could be a good chance to optimise the code to be a translator rather than an emulator so it can simulate it at near native speeds. It would wipe UAE/PPC out of the water.
So, even if OS4 wasn't ported, and QEMU could do a Sam460 there's always a fallback for the first usable AmigaOS4 laptop! |

You don't have to give a great amount. It can be micro financed if a great number of people give a small amount. Spread the news.

A couple times I have wished I had free time, as qemu had the 460ec chip supported, sam460ex woudnt be as much work as an xe or peg2, which would require more chipset additions, for southbridge and the mai northbridge.

I thought the XE may be easier or done already since it's pretty close to a PC with a PPC processor. That's how people describe it. Except for the MAI it uses off the shelf parts AFAIK. |

Well, XE is basically a PC with a PPC processor. As is x5000, x1000, etc.
But unless someone has already added the Articia northbridge to Qemu for something else, then that missing piece needs created. And unless someone has already added the 686b Southbridge for something else, then that missing piece also needs added. Or whatever the Peg2 north/southbridges are. (I forget now if Peg2 has Articia or something else for North, and I do think it has different Southbridge than XE has)
Sam460ex seemed easier, as the 460ex CPU was already in Qemu, and there are less external components, with the 460 bringing a lot of north/south features into the SOC chip. So Qemy is missing fewer things for a full Sam460ex system than it is missing from a full XE or Peg system.
Regardless, it is great news, IMHO, to see any PPC Amiga system completed in Qemu. I'm quite excited about some possibiliities this can allow.
I also look forward to some benchmarks comparing WinUAE-PPC with this Qemu.
Back to the real topic here, I am also very hopeful to get a real PPC laptop. I am involved with the PPC laptop group, and have a t2080 dev system. This Qemu development should allow poking at t2080 hardware via passthrough to the Qemu sam460ex guest OS, which I am very interested in playing with. I also have a t4240 dev system, and am excited about same possibility there. Now, if only time was more friendly to my crazy ideas...Last edited by billt on 24-Aug-2017 at 04:50 PM.

It uses the Marvell Discovery II. The whole point was to move away from MAI. |

Yes but it seems it hasn't helped any emulation yet. When it comes down to it, even with similar PC hardware onboard, it still needs to act like any emulator and provide an MMU hook that goes through each read/write like a siv. Simulating a hardware action or I/O device with a software routine.
You've given enough details there for what is needed. Though I did wonder if a Pegasos "cheat" could be put into place by using the Mac emulator as a base and replacing OpenFirmware with SmartFirmware. Or even the same but with CHRP hardware base. The Pegasos is fairly clean hardware. Having support on PPC Debian CDs with CHRP kernel.
It looks like my AmigaOneX86 idea is closer than it used to be. Or whatever I was calling it. Though now it looks like an AmigaOne 500X86 is closer than we think. |

the pegasos 2 is the best amigang ever made. chrp, book3s, openfirmware and great performances. it was ready for smp too. _________________ I love Amiga and new hope by AmigaNG A 500 + ; CDTV; CD32; PowerMac G5 Quad 8GB,SSD,SSHD,7800gtx,Radeon R5 230 2GB; MacBook Pro Retina I7 2.3ghz; #nomorea-eoninmyhome |

It's just an Sam460 in QEMU, i get why it could be useful, but I don't see what's so exiting about that. |

As both use the same CPU emulation technology, CPU performance should be similar. |

Well, in theory it could reach close to native speed on any PowerPC compatible hardware with the help of KVM. |
