I have bought a new multi-voltage PSU and squeezed it into the original brick...
Amiga PSU Replacement Mod
I finished the mod and everything works fine. Details are below from a previous post...
Drewlio77
Hi,
I found nice replacement PSU for the Amiga Classic Wedge computers that (with some minor plastic modification) can be fitted into the Original Brick case. I have two European PSUs that donated their enclosures for this project since they are not voltage selectable for the 120V systems here in the US and Canada.
Classic Replacement PSU
It's Specs:
63.5 Watts Total
Channel 1: +5 Volts @ 5.5 Amps (1.0 Amp more than the Stock A500 PSU) Channel 2: +12 Volts @ 2.5 Amps (1,5A more than the Stock A500 PSU) Channel 3: -12 Volts @ 0.5 Amps (0.4 A more than the stock A500 PSU)
Input: 90-264VAC @ 47-440Hz (Power for all!)
And all this for $16.00 US.
Once I complete the transplant I will upload some pics of the Mod.

| I got some of these: Amiga ATX Adaptors
Same seller but was advertising on eBay at the time. His homemade Amiga power plugs weren't great so I chopped off some old Amiga PSU cables and soldered them into the box of tricks. works perfectly.
I like a quiet/silent setup so splashed out on a Corsair RM550x. _________________ Amiga A1200, 3.1 ROMs, Blizzard 1230 MKIV 64MB & FPU, 4GB DoM SSD, Workbench 3.1 |

Oh poor just read thread
Why use a power supply that is weaker than a A500 psu originally was.. +5v was 4.5amp on A500psu and +5v is what is important. You are in effect making it as weak as A600/1200 psu. While it will work for most machines, heavily expanded ones may have problems. Another thing to consider is many of these caged psu’s were designed to be in a fanned enclosure, and although the 500 might only push the specs, this should be considered. The data sheet should indicate if a fan is needed. Mean well makes some terrible psu’s(not all). Many have high ripple and some come with poor quality caps. As usual check the datasheet. I hope this doesn’t come off as negative,i just want to point out the facts to users.
I have read else where that the A500 PSU specs
+5v 2.5A +12v 1.0A -12V 0.1A Total Power 25.7w
Who is right ????????

There are different specs on different models of power supply. The A500 doesn't need 4.5A unless it's massively expanded. Even an A1200 with an accelerator and hard drive only uses 3A or less. 25W is plenty for any Amiga and modest expansions.
As for Meanwell PSUs, they're used a lot in industry. While they might have higher ripple than other more expensive modules, they're probably still better than the original Amiga PSUs, especially ones with 30-year-old smoothing capacitors in them. If you were really worried you could measure the ripple and connect an appropriate capacitor across the outputs, but I can't see it being an issue. _________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X |
