@thread

Thanks for all the positive feedback it is encouraging. The design is coming along nicely and I am trying to include as many comments into the design as possible but as always it is a serious balancing act.

I have already messaged Trevor because the A1222 is a good fit with this.

A1500 being a Slimmer case is a nice point but i feel to allow for as much to fit as possible is good and to be fair this is not a lot taller than that, maybe an inch but you get so much extra for it.

Colours will be cream and black to start but others could be done later.

Drive flaps will be tricky but I am very mindful of not destroying the design with drive mounting bays.

Keycaps offer will useful, I am moving to cherry switched keyboards so they swap out easy.

Keep them coming and I will update on progress soon which is coming on nicely.

Steve

Make a case for the Amiga Tabor similar to Cryorig's successfully Kickstarter-funded Taku ITX case (albeit with a floppy and a couple of 9 pin dsub slots), and you got yourself a deal.

@Petah

Sadly that looks nothing like an Amiga, nice case though, the concept is a retro case inspired by the designs of the A3000 and A1000, i.e. a good looking modern reincarnation.

Sadly if you have another look it failed to reach its rather high funding.

@clusteruk

On reflection for me to part with cold hard cash I would need the option of installing old A500/A1200 hardware (see post #16). To be honest the only thing I really don't like in your preliminary design is needing to use a laptop CD Drive rather than a standard one; I have a standard SCSI CD Drive & would like to use it internally (I'm sure I'm not the only one).

@Tpod

I think the reason for the slim laptop DVD is that it's slot loading one so you don't need a full 5.25" drive bay for a tray loading drive in the front fascia, just a narrow slot. This is why I suggested a flap to hide full drive bays but that's mechanically more tricky and probably more expensive to manufacture and consumes more space inside the case.

@IanP & @clusteruk

The one really impractical thing about the A3000 was the lack of a 5.25” drive bay! I actually brought my A2000 instead partly because of this. You cant get laptop SCSI CD drives as far as I know so for many A500 owners your stuck with having it external (unless your also installing a Vampire etc.). For A1200 owners etc. its not such a big deal as they have IDE.

The primary purpose of a computer case is to house all the basic computer components, a lack of a 5.25” bay is significantly reducing its flexibility. Surely there must be some way (that's not too expensive) to have one included with this otherwise excellent case!

Why not do what did with the kickstarter A1200 cases where you could break out the expansion blanks you wanted to use

To the threadstarter:

Posting my first comment here, I never bothered to look at anything but that scanned ad. Having a second look at your post, I peeked at that Youtube-video clip you are refering to. Call it love at first sight, but I really enjoy your design. That being said, I think you seriously underestimate the importance of using inline graphics. People are, generally speaking, lazy (hey - I'm a good example myself), and you basically have to chew the food for them.

That being said, your design inargubly deserves to be in the limelight. For anyone who hasn't seen the Youtube presentation yet, here are a few screenshots from it portraying the computer case that this thread is all about :

Since all of the future Amiga Tabor owners will share a common problem - a place to house their new computer hardware - I think it would be well deservered to ship this with an official recognition by Acube/A-Eon, with matching labels to boot. Make this a Kickstarter, and I'll be down for a case.

Oh, and since you asked for feedback and suggestions - right off the bat, this is what I think of:

  • A nuance that matches the original Commodore hardware as close as possible (to match any accessories like original external floppies et cetera).

  • A UV resistant outer paint coat.

  • Optional standoffs for users prefering the case to stand on four (4) separate legs instead of two (or three) bars.

  • Integrated, rectangular green power LED similar/identical to what the A3000 sports.

  • Integrated, rectangular yellow disk activity LED similar/identical to what the A3000 sports.

  • Internal cable clips for neat and easy cable management.

  • Removable slots on both sides to allow for the user to customize his or her case with any needed ports - while some users prefer two 9 pin DSUB-ports on the right side, others may like an additional two DSUB-ports and two USB-ports on the left side. Some users may need four HDMI ports and others no extra ports at all, but I can pretty much assure you that most (if not all) users will avoid putting their dremel tools inside the case unless they absolutely have to. A well thought-through slot system with a few different removable slots for a few different setups would allow the case to be as flexible as possible. Also, official project files for 3D printers would allow for even more end user flexibility, allowing the case to support virtually any port that will fit within the slot frame.

  • A nice, Commodore style box - because everyone enjoys a nice unboxing experience, and the box will provide a great storage solution for traveling.

Keep up the good work, and again - advertise your work. It's well deserved.

Sounds like a good idea to me, hopefully Steve will think so too.

@clusteruk

Take a look at this ATX 'DESIGNER' posh looking ultra-slim desktop

This is what users are drooling over -class.

Like the above post, the cryorig taku ultra slim case is the way to go

Its like a metal drawer, in curved metal, light up power button, slim.

@Petah

Thanks for the positive comments.

At the moment I am still in design phase looking for feedback but yours is very helpful.

However, I have got the quotes for manufacture which mean this project is possible within the parameters of under 149 euro's/£'s

I will have to Kickstarter it because the injection moulding is very expensive but I already have 150 interested people so I need 200 to get this thing launched and make it profitable.

There is a lot of information coming and I promise I will promote this as well as the original Checkmate Digital A1500 which a lot of people have asked David Pleasance about and the story is to be in his new book.

More soon.

Steve

Here is a picture of the case in various guises, image is large so you can see the detail.

Power supply must be on the right hence the drive bay is centered, there is a lot of thinking going into this based on my own understanding of what is needed and what people suggest. Bare in mind I cannot please everyone but the crucial thing is the external appearance.

@clusteruk

I have a couple of questions
How are the Mouse and Joystick Ports for the A600/A1200 going the be mounted as they would be under the PSU
How would you fit a Gotek and other 3 1/2 drive day (Compact Flash etc). Ideally i would like 2
How are other Ports mounted USB,VGA(Indi),HDMI(Vampire),RJ45(PCMCIA Nic)
How will the PCMCIA port be handled, as i have a 600 with a 3Com PCMCIA card
How would an Amiga 600 be power, some sort of PSU socket replacement?

@SpaceMonkeyUK

Hopefully the next round of design drawings and a video will answer all these questions

Pleased your making the change of power supply; potential to have 600w could be a real plus for some & also then being able to fit floppy & DVD (laptop type) drives side by side makes a lot of sense. Looks like my GVP A500-HD+ would probably fit, still not sure if the Supra28mhz would also fit?

Although it appears I will have to give up my hope of a being able to fit a standard 5.25” DVD Drive, it would still take up less desk space than having everything hanging off the end of the A500.... tempting.

Measurements (at the moment) are 100mm high, 333mm front to back & about 421-425mm wide for those who are interested.

Please email me the dimensions of your 5 1/4" drive and I will see, because I am still working on the dimensions of the front cutout/maker section

@clusteruk

5 1/4" optical drives have become a rare thing: in some of the latest Silverstone case models (like the FTZ01-E) the optical drive bay is gone for good. So I'm all for your choice of the slim-drive slot: don't spoil your beautiful case design with a 5 1/4" bay.
