re:bad guys

There are more bad guys in government and big companies than individuals held mutually accountable. Encryption keeps the bad guys out.

Skype is not a peer to peer (end to end) application, so there is always someone at Skype who can capture your conversation. When Microsoft bought Skype, I lost the ability to delete voice mails. Since Bill Gates is a Globalist and Microsoft has preferential treatment from the U.S. government, and probably other governments, and Windows makes hidden copies of all your Office files, I don't trust them.

@g01df1sh

My mail is end-to-end encyrpted, most of my messaging is end-to-end encrypted. I have tracking blockers on my browser and my hard disk is encrypted.

Not because I'm up to something, I just don't like the idea of beeing snooped for data.

@g01df1sh

I am not an encryption expert, but here are some thoughts I have about potential methods of decryption.
- secretly transmit the key so that the middle gateway can decrypt the stream.
- do a secondary key encryption and compression with a key known by The middle gateway.
- copy the data before encryption or after decryption
- copy the encrypted data at the middle gateway, and deposit it at the NSA for decryption using one of the above keys, or efficient decryption breaking algorithms.
- assume that most of the skype users will be on cell networks, and make a hidden simultaneous call, which is collected by the Stingray program and other methods.

We know they have been collecting data at the primary Internet backbones sice the 1990s, but i am not familiar with the decryption methods being used.

Edit... After I wrote this, I'm wondering if they will just create a dynamic key at the gateway instead of creating your own. In that case, of course They can get all of the data unencrypted and the only people it would block are LAN / WAN sniffers.

@g01df1sh

Do you really think that bad guys won't find another way of messaging each other if their preferred method is opened up? Then all you're left with is a system where legitimate, innocent people have their conversations readable/listenable by the government and anyone else who figures out how to use the same back door, while the "bad guys" use WhatsApp / iMessages / anything else that offers end-to-end encryption. Hell, there are probably "bad guy" developers out there who have created secret chat apps that you've never even heard of.

The way things are going politically both in US and Europa (and the rest of the world for that matter), free speech is under assault from goverments. Even if Microsoft wrote in big fat letters on a billboard "We wont hand over your information to x goverments" they are just one court order away from doing that at any time.

The socalled "bad guys" I get a sense you are alluding to is the least of our problem. Fascism both in USA and Europa is a bigger issue. And then I mean our goverments. I guess it might sound very harsh/tinfoil, but all fascism means is a corporate takeover of goverment. Ask yourself which way things are going.

@Daedalus

Hi Agree they most likely do have custom built software for messaging. There is no right or wrong answer to this issue. Either way the bad guys will always be one step ahead. What needs to happen is the punishment if your caught needs to be a hell of a lot worse than it currently is.

If backdoors to encryption won't work for that reason, then surely there *is* a right answer: don't have back doors to the encryption. It's very simple.
