| The problem with x86 is that only a very small number of companies have a license, which makes it impossible for new companies to enter the market and compete.
x86 itself isn't that great, the only value is in the backwards compatibility with decades of software and all the new software that's still being developed. Of course on Linux, plenty of software gets ported to ARM, but on the Windows side, which is what most consumers still use, x86 is the only choice. Emulation might be an option that might eventually offer decent performance, but if that becomes too common, AMD and Intel might try to interfere. |
