Interesting option if you're interested in exploring the P1022.

Well you don't exactly have to explore the P1022 or get technical with the CPU in any specific way. Unless you were that way inclined. For the most part it is running system software and catching any bugs.

Discount or not, I'd rather spend the extra money and buy an X5000, with OS4 and MorphOS support already available.

I'd rather the X5000 have AltiVec, regardless of me making specific use of it, as it is a lot to spend on a computer with a jumped up PowerPC G3 class processor.

But, in your case, the X5000 beta program would be for you.

@Hypex

Not that it matters, but all the e500s and e5500s lack AltiVec as well.
That's why the e6500 cored T2080 was chosen for the laptop project.

I'm not sure how IBM's VMX instructions on Power compare.

@arthoropod

Considering the options I think that T2080 is a good choice. Looking up the specs, which are harder to find than an Intel CPU model number, it appears to be like an AMD 64-bit 8 core CPU. That is, compared with an AMD I was looking at some time back; a 64-bit, dual hardware threaded, four core design. Nice.

It's been a while since we've brought up the VMX vs. AltiVec vector wars. But that's another good point. All we need is another vector set to futher split code up.
