@Karlos

this might be interesting

I just haven't the time or patience to wade through that many pages though.

Still down. Now that it's been two weeks, we can of course start to use the "two more weeks" line

Dunno. If I recall protocol correctly, in months that start with a "J" it's "when it's done".

Of course if you question this further then it transforms into "you don't know what's happening. Things are happening 'behind the scenes'."

I'm curious as to what they have planned. From the statement it sounds like they are upgrading/migrating the forum software. There's quite a lot of content to import to any new forum, that's for sure. I'm sure the xoops to vbulletin migration only took a few days, with basic forum functionality available more or less migrated in a day.

Delays, excuses and "oh no" so the migration to Facebook can be final ;)

I have a feeling that waiting for AO to come back will be like waiting for Brexit to happen.....

Given that the forum is public and relies on the support of its users I think that when a statement is made that they will update as the work progresses and then fail to do so, it is going to make folk less than happy. There is obviously one page still active and given that the timeline has missed the date couldn't somebody at the forum just drop a bread crumb of comfort that the forum will be back. There is so little Amiga discussion right now and what ever your views on AO it is important as an Amiga portal and information gathering site.

So if anyone at Amiga Org is reading this, maybe an update would help. And sorry, some of us don't and won't subscribe to a social media farming site like Facebook or any of the other similar sites. You have a page on the site, why not simply update that.

One last thing.... Whenever I log into this site Amiga World Net I get a notification that the site cannot be found but when I refresh I am logged in. Weird.

Words can be confusing. I read this differently.

Quote:
We will update the website with more information as the work progresses.

If I was going to post an update before the site was back online I would have said:

"We will update the vBulletin Message page".

I always took what was written to mean that once the site was back online they would discuss the site upgrades and how both the owner and users could make good use those upgrades.

It's now almost three weeks with no update on the progress so far, which for one of (if not the) the oldest Amiga community forum is a bit of a poor show really.

You could say the same for Tabor, SMP and 64-bit OS4, office suite, etc.....just about any topic related to NG Amigas and OS4. I wouldn't get into a hurry. I think it was 11 years ago that we were being promised a port of Open Office and then Libre Office and even earlier for the other aforementioned features. If there's one thing you can say about NG Amigas and OS4 is that any progress is glacial.

I'm not sure there's a direct comparison there. Perhaps it the site was to be be hosted on an Amiga lol.

2GB database is nothing. At my workplace our development systems alone have to work with databases ten times that size.

Quite surprised at how long amiga.org has been down.
I wonder if there is a behind the scenes conflict about ownership of the Amiga.org name...

@deadduckni

If it were that, I'd imagine the domain itself would be down. However, the admin have simply disabled the forum.

It may be that they are performing an entirely manual migration to a new platform that does not have an existing import facility for the version of vbulletin in use on the current site. The migration from xoops to VB was something like 60% automatic, 40% manual (converting old news to VB threads, converting all the legacy links in the site content, importing the old gallery to photoplog etc)

Ding Ding Ding. We have a winner. Im working on it. However as you pointed out, 2GB is nothing when your doing it all manually. It takes seconds. Obviously this is not the case (it takes time to manually migrate db) and why statements are made when people have no idea is beyond me, just escalates things in the wrong direction.

I will have to check if I have admin rights to change page statement. As no date should have been set until decisions were made on how to proceed. We understand how important amiga.org forums are to the community. So Im not rushing anything, I want it done correctly.

I have been given this task and I will do my best to get it done as soon as possible.

As the developer in charge, have you considered modifying the database?

@thread

an update on status from the guys at A-EON:

Quote:
Essential Server Work
24 June 2018

We apologise for the continuing downtime of the Amiga.org forums and some other Amiga.org services.

We are still working on the server migration for several other important sites that we operate including this one. Due to recent time constraints and work load pressures, we have not been able to afford as much time as we hoped to the work. Some other website work has overrun adversely affecting the schedule. Please check back here for more information soon as we progress with this upgrade work.

In the meatime we are continuing to run the official Amiga.org Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/amiga.org

Additionally other Amiga.org services have been successfully brought back up and running:

Amiga Developer Network: www.amiga.org/developer

Amiga.org Wiki: wiki.amiga.org

If you have any enquiries about this process, please email webmaster [at] amiga.org
