Yes, but... Darwin never went anywhere to speak of. It's a footnote.

What you say makes no sense, wherever macOS is going, Darwin is going too, Darwin is the kernel on which macOS runs.

I suppose what you are talking about _alternative_ Darwin distros.

I suspect that Haiku is _a lot_ easier to develop for than AROS is, it has posix layer and does not rely on outdated legacy concepts like AROS does.

@OneTimer1

It's from an old TV series, probably many "number 6"s around. Our Number 6 has repeatedly failed to grasp German properly :)

Yes. Of course it is still developed. In slowmotion. I have a feeling that good news might come at next AmiWest. But don't hold your breath ;)

How do you know? The finances don't look good and a lot of Hyperion's money is going on fighting IP battles! Why are you so confident that development is ongoing? It's more likely that A-EON is paying the AmigaOS contractors directly to port AmigaOS 4.1 FE to Tabor. I can't see that Hyperion are are doing anything other than sitting back and collecting royalties off A-EON OEM hardware bundles, pressing / allowing the online sale of current version of AmigaOS and then spending the money on fighting legal battles and servicing their debt. New drivers and Enhancer updates are now being handled by A-EON and are no longer core features of the OS itself!

Yes, what you're saying pretty much sums it up IMO.

FFS.. A-EON should just say fuck it.. and hire a few developers to fork dragonfly kernel, and build a modern amiga on top of that...

AmigaOS is to much a mess to ever get anything modern out from, so take DragonFly, and add some more amiga ish features, and write a nice gui (look at enlightment)...

Ofcource that would fragment the community even more, but AmigaOS is a mess, and will never come modern. There is a reason apple gave up on system os, and started with a freebsd kernel to build something new.

You seem to see something wrong... the main person behind a-eon who invests money is Trevor D.

it is a kind of risky hobby for him but he is trying to recollect his money through the customers. Hardware development is costly but to completely redevelop a OS is even more and then who will buy it? You could of course drop anything amiga related and use what is there but then you end at something like linux. Where is the niche for that?

But I agree... NG failed because it inherited most of the amiga shortcomings of the past. It should have make a big cut from day one but for that it is too late now. AmigaOS (or AROS/MorphOS) with current limitations cannot be modernized but that comes with some reasons... only because of that it was possible to create something like Petunia. Alternative you would use UAE for 68k integration but of course that is different feeling from users point of view.

Once more unto the breach.

My first thought: are you currently running Dragonfly and/or Enlightenment? If not, maybe you should consider trying them. Dragonfly along with UAE or FS-UAE would make a pretty good Amiga emulation system. You could install Amiwm instead of Enlightment if you want a more Amiga-like desktop, but you will have to spend some time configuring it.

A paradox: Dragonfly is "lighter" than Linux, but a *lightweight* Linux distro (i.e., not Fedora or Ubuntu) often feels faster because some of the extra "bloat" in Linux is actually some really crafty code that makes it run faster.

Project idea: Dragonfly's live image is out-of-date (or possibly non-existent; I haven't checked for a while). If someone were to create a Dragonfly "spin" pre-configured with Amiwm, UAE or FS-UAE, some nice icons, and a collection of useful software, there might be some interest in that.

I have an Intel NUC with everything you just mentioned, latest DragonFlyBSD with FS-UAE and AmiWM.

Doing any sort of fork is rather pointless, much better to build on top of upstream and avoid having to maintain patches etc.

Yes, I agree completely, which is why I avoided using the f-word (fork).

But a "spin" would be maintainable, since it wouldn't involve anything much beyond package selection and configuration (and maybe some artwork, such as icons).

Since Dragonfly does not currently have a live image (I checked) it would probably get a lot downloads from people who are curious about Dragonfly but don't want to install it to try it out.

@bison, @StarF

There's a reason why Carl Sassenrath called Linux - albeit 20 years ago - "old junk." It wasn't so much a criticism of the code quality as it was of legacy aspects of the overall design. Since then, one by one, these subsystems have largely been updated and replaced, however the speed you perceive remains, primarily, due to the massive gains in hardware performance rather than innovation in the operating system software.

There are caveats to that statement, of course. Dragonfly is a fine example of innovation - given Dillon's expertise in lockless (lock-free) programming (a field I am intimately familiar with).

Still, the average user only experiences these things in a tangible way when they are running benchmarks - certainly not when they are hunting for new and better (and missing) applications and features for their installations (or adding eye candy for that matter).

Throughout, AmigaOS has also needed to undergo such a transformation, but it seems clear by now that there is no vision for the future on the part of the current ownership (Hyperion, I would like to be proven wrong).

I certainly agree that some things are a mess in AmigaOS, but consider the case of datatypes motivating/inspiring the development of Reggae - there's an example of keeping the good, letting go of the bad, and making it into something new that works and works well.

Oh, dear! Somebody asked "the question." It happens at least once a year.
