Apollo 060 - Phone Me Now !!!

Hi

Thought this might amuse some of you that remember these cards. Has to be the only card I've used that did stuff even before I had clicked the mouse.... or felt like that anyway.

By the way... that 'Phone Me Now !!!' is the comment by SysInfo.

@scuzz

Proud owner of a Blizzard 1260 + SCSI, so I know the feeling. First time I saw the "Phone me now!!!" in SysInfo, a big smile painted on my face ;)

Ferrán.

@Ferry

This was an amazing bit of kit seeings as it could run out of the computer without the fan/cooling. I did struggle with the PCMCIA when I first used the card. Amazing speed. Never used with the SCSI which I am sure made the card a dream.

Phone Me Now! Here too in Sysinfo.

Apollo 060 card with fpu prosessor too and Picasso IV and some crystals but not overclocking too much. There could be soldered another memory card too. Just be careful with the battery not to leak.

Went to a electric shop that took it wired away so if leaks, it leaks elswhere.

Should check the tower and take away the whole battery. Thank You for the reminder.

The XE battery problem is just silly, can't boot without.

Regs from Elbox Power Tower.

----------

Edit: The Battery from the Amiga is on top of a pc tower, so long wired so no problem.

The Blizzard 1260 comes with a rechargeable battery, model VL2020, soldered to the board, and sealed, it does not leak at all. Difficult to replace if you have to -involves desoldering and soldering it again-, but MUCH safer than CR2032.

Saluditos,

Ferrán.

Heh, I run it with the trapdoor in place… ;)

And with an Ethernet adapter in the PCMCIA, no problem at all.

Saluditos,

Ferrán.

@scuzz

I always found them way too expensive.

WinUAE and SysInfo does the same for me now, with Gigabit linked ethernet and USB support and 1080p screen resolution

"Hey, do you remember the sensation, the feeling of driving a 1958 Corvette?"

"Well, I prefer my new Hyunday, it has park assist, rear camera, bluetooth and USB charger…"

Shades, I think we are talking about very different things and feelings…

Saluditos,

I prefer the Vette and by a lot

Back on topic, I remember that feeling too. The Apollo 060 made eveything so fast and also allowed us to have more complex demos. Nice

Used to have '040. Too hot for DT. Changed to 060+ the tower eventually. Got a 020 for free from a friend, the fast mem helps in another A1200. Thought it is funny that there is a 020 allready. More MhZ. Maybe most compatible as 030.

Apollo was the most fastest, don't know about today. Somebody had even water coolin.

Water+electric is not a good combination if keeping long. Sooner or later.

Remember to clean the fan if any in a turbo card. Passive cooling is easier to vacuum clean carefully.

@Ferry

This reads Z2A110 311

Easy to solder a new one as + - on the battery wire. Can be such a solderer as I am. (Not very good)

As in the vet made - off with a swich and loading sometimes. A bit more expensive Red Top Battery.

No need in the Amiga anymore to have a battery. Retired from office work.

Hmm,.....I'm not so sure anymore.
I mean, I get the exact same look and the same feel, yet under the hood, it blows away all of the original stuff. It will take the cake out of your original hardware's hands, eat it, then sing heavenly songs out of .mp3 playback, and then read the paper while your original hardware is still booting.
Why, well because, off the mark, it boots in seconds and I get all the new functions like USB, SATA-3 gen speeds, 1080 screen resolutions, gigabit ethernet, oh, and did I mention, it runs on my laptop? yeah, it's fully portable as well

The time of old hardware is over now.
MyZ3 fastlane is now the slowlane, my Cybervision is now cyber-cataract and my 040/40 is now, oh for god sake, not worth mentioning any more than a 486 is worth keeping.
When you can get a superior experience with all the nostalgia of the yesteryear as well, it's time to move on. Maybe Vampire 4 will fix things a little. We will have to wait and see, however, I'd prefer new boards that are cheap and yet offer a better or similar experience to what I can get out of emulation on my i7 laptop.

Hehe…

Well, the question is that my 30 years old hardware still boots in seconds nowadays, as it did back when the best Windows system available then lasted like 3 or 4 minutes to boot, hehehe

And sure you have modern hardware you can use on your emulator, but that's the thing: it's an emulator, not the real thing.

Same thing happens in other order of things: I can use a typography or an effect in Photoshop to simulate Sumi-e, but I'd prefer to do REAL Sumi-e. I can use a font to simulate handwriting with a fountain pen, but I prefer -I still do- to write with a REAL fountain pen…

Oh, and to be absolutely fair, I do use a fast Macbook Pro i7 @ 2'8GHz, 16GB RAM, etc.… for my work, and I enjoy using it, but I'm back using my Amigas because the feeling is very different using one or the other.

Saluditos,

Ferrán.

@Ferry

But, here's the things.

Using it :
- It looks the same
- It 'feels' the same, actually, it feels superior in every way.
- It boots faster. A lot, faster.
- It's more reliable. (Even if I have a disk crash, I re-load the image on another computer.)
- It's portable with good battery life.
- It's actually more compatible with Original programs and games because it's not bound to AGA or 030
- It connects to a multitude of modern peripherals.

People restore old cars all the time with a modern theme. Even Jaguar did an electric E type.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kQOB_DanBo
I understand you like old hardware but, that's where we are different. I love the AMIGA experience and want new and better hardware that I can afford without the SuperCar price tag.
Emulation has given that to me and more. It performs better than any AMIGA out there with the classic look and all the bells and whistles.

Until someone does things differently, like, I dunno a $60 ARM unit with 4GB of ram that I can put in my pocket and run off USB 1 power, running native AMIGA (As an example because Linux is doing this now.) But people dont like ARM (eww its ARM) etc
Port the OS already. To something we can tinker with.
It's a hobby now, allow a hobby growth for heavens sake. It's no longer able to compete with the world. At least release it to the people instead of burying it in obscure out of touch hardware that's so expensive that you need to be "The Richest Kid in Dubai" to realisticly play with it.

Emulation seems only fair. Not only fair, it's a no brainer.
The OS barely sees any upgrade as it is and it's only getting slower and less affordable.

So, I don't agree with you. Unfortunatly. Because I would like to agree with you. But I can't.

@Ferry

I too like running the Amiga as such, in Classic fashion. Original hardware is where true nostalgia lies. I have Amiga Forever on my PC. For me emulation is OK but more of a convenience than the real experience.

I have a Sam460 that runs Amiga OS 4.1FE, I like it but since the bulk of my Amiga exposure was on my A500 with 1Meg of Ram, KickStart 1.3 and two floppy drives, I am a Classic fan through and trough.

I guess that is were Emulation vs. the Real thing Starts and Ends; What did you experience the Amiga on and When. I owned my 500 and A1200 when it was being sold in 1991 and 1993. I lived the Era and it was awesome! Firing up the original and ancient hardware brings it all back :)

I have owned 1 or 2 060 boards. Wonderful tech but rather expensive and you lose compatibility in some games. Good medium is an 030.

@scuzz,

Used to have a TekMagic 2060 w 128MB in my 2000, loved it until it died, wanted to cry. So I fell back to the 030/40 and it's just not the same. A bit more compatible but ssllooww in comparison. Waiting for a V4, must have.
