Obviously it is great that the museum is giving people the opportunity to experience what using the Amiga was like for Andy Warhol but they seem to have created a weird custom emulation experience rather than refurbish the actual machine! Was this the best option? Surely a SSD and recapping would have been easier and more authentic?

@BigD

What a bunch of retards. What ever PC is in there I bet it would not out last a recapped Amiga. Plus we all know how stable windows is LOL. Plus how many times will it have a notice saying sorry out of use pc is currently doing updates this may take some time LOL

@g01df1sh

I particularly resent this line:

Quote:
The emulator even recreated the slow disk access and lag of the beloved Amiga.

Slow disk access was a result of high hard drive proces and hence a reliance on floppy disks at the time. That is not a fair representation of the platform to modern children and there should not be emulated 'lag' built into the system unnecessarily!!

Would you ask a school child to play Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior or Body Blows from floppy in the 21st century or would you install it to a SSD or memory card because it infuriates them pointlessly IMHO!

@BigD

An SSD won't make the lethargic harddrive controllers any faster.

@fishy_fis

You can bet they are trying to replicate floppy drive access speeds not 1980s hard drive speeds. That IMHO is an unnecessary slight on the memory the platform. Things like the Trinology Systems hdd controller / Kronos 1000 or the C-Ltd., USA A1000 SCSI controllers were available to add external functionality so its not beyond reason that an A1000 would have a hard drive in the 1980s!

So in this case they have an actual living fossil of a computer system and still put up a fake that isn't as the orginal was. Typical!

Now, what they should really have, is the actual A1000 used on the night by the Warhol himself.

If that is unavailable, then surely they could get an A1000 and set it up with the same type of hardware and disks.

But what really doesn't make sense, they are letting them touch the props! The museum is breaking the number one rule of museum exhibitions! Visitors are forbidden from touching the exhibit!!

Lots of modern museums encourage interaction, that much is a good thing. It's just the effort they've gone to in order to reinvent the wheel is staggering! They've gutted a working A1000 and monitor just to aid their own limited understanding of the old hardware! They stupidly decided it would be unreliable and not fit for purpose despite all the evidence pointing out they are very reliable and upgradable. They've done the kids a diservice by playing done how much was possible with 1980s technology.

+1, original Amiga1000 with HD would play those drawings non stop quite nicely for years to come...though probably not the most energy efficient nowadays ...still a museum should have the 'real' deal on hand not emulation of real deal

@all

At the Amiga 30th, we pulled Amiga 1000 serial #1 out of storage and it booted with no issues. Iontank ripped off that Museum. What they did does not look cheap. Imagine how many A1K's they could have put into storage for that amount of money and their PC will stop working long before a real 1K would!

@BigD

It's a museum piece, you really SHOULD NOT have the original machine used by Andy Warhol available for some young kid to spill cocacola on!

An accurate emulation makes far more sense. And yes floppies were slow, so to give the kids the real feal they need to be slow. Warhols A1k used floppies as far as I recal so emulating one with a HD would be inaccurate.

Did not have to be the original A1000 just a A1000 not emulation...

Iontank also took great care to restore and integrate the original mice and keyboards so they would work with the new systems.

Uhm... Thats not an A1000 keyboard...

I remember reading this about 4 years ago when the artwork inside the diskettes were found.

I am still not clear as to why the people involved in that project made such a big deal about retrieving 30 years old files.

I have an A1000 and it loads programs and files with no problems.

But I am curious to know if the museum will ever make ADFs out of those disks.

I doubt it. It's almost like they have no idea that these machines still boot up never mind have the ability to save and export files via CrossDos to PC Media!! Why would they ever work out that there is an Amiga community never mind a community that would find the original Amiga files interesting! For a museum they really are ignorant!

In their defense I guess it came as a surprise to System 3 that Amigans still wanted their version of Putty Squad after 20 years but we did and were prepared to help with distribution! We really are an unknown and untapped resource for these people!

For authenticity you suggest they take Andy Warhol's actual machine and fit an SSD in it? Is that so they can wreck this priceless artefact before giving school groups a chance to destroy it themselves?

Madness.

Good spot! That's a silly oversight given the effort they made elsewhere.

+1 and that Outty Squad release after 20 years still brings a smile to my face

The original can stay behind perspex as it is currently. In the meantime they have taken an additional A1000 and conducted surgery on it and filled it with PC innards to emulate the A1000 that used to be there. That is the madness! Would they have butchered an Apple I (harder to do because no standard case) or Apple II in that way?

Maybe when the PC dies in 5 years they will replace it with a real A1000
