I have to admit that I never saw it before, but I only got back to Amiga 6 months ago.

This would be rather interesting indeed if true, according to On the edge:the spectacular rise and fall of commodore, Jack Tramiel used this tactic to build commodore up towards one platform or another pet Vic and c64 because he was severely strapped for cash and his 'fiscal CEO' would not go public to raise money to do it properly.The book sites two reasons for doing this
1. Vertical intergration (if you own that tech you can shuffle that companies numbers to get the tech cheap in a price war) eg C= owned MOS a ramchip maker (ram was a specialty) and eagle LCD among many others.
2.cash strapped and in imminent danger of shutting down. This tactic of buying up tech companies to pay for their R&D was called a short term tactic , meaning it may not have the legs for growth (especially if you starve that newly acquired tech company of is cash, and selectively pluck its tech workers , or allow no further funding for innovation, and the tech workers just scatter to where they can express themselves.)
This second tactic has the effect of sucking the company dry and discarding the dessicated shell, OR in the case of MOS freezing the tech and turning them into a glorified wherehouser.

But in all cases, IMO if its IBMs only answer to r&d permanently, It fossilises them and opens up the door to other tech companies to seize the lead to become the leader. The company who is happy to fund r&d and innovate.
Then again IBM have always gone about their ways with very mickey mouse mechanical movements and basically despised the organic empassioned innovation that C= personified.

Well - would that be an Escom A1200? I do not think it ever made it into the US, nor did the CD32.

I think there were some Canadian sellers trying to send the CD32 in the USA. But not much success.

It looks as if CMD was selling more refurbished C64 and C128 in the same period.

No, it was Commodore's Desktop Dynamite pack which was in high demand around that time. I was attempting to buy Special Reserve's last one when one of the other salesman sold it on another line. Dark times. Thank God for the CD32, SX-1 and later the SX-32 expansions. The Escom A1200s were a rip off in comparison and still didn't have CD-rom drives as standard!
