Yeah, I know and in my opinion, this is the only reason. I also know what my RX 250 does bring (compositing or Warp3D). My point is : nothing will take advantage of the extra power (except Spencer since on my RX 250 I have to lower a bit the quality).

Warp3D Nova opens up the feature of these cards and the extra power they provide but it doesn't negate the fact that both Warp3D and compositing both benefit from the extra power in the form of significantly higher clock speeds compared to the R100 and R200 based cards of the past.

As I pointed out in my previous post, Amicraft also requires Warp3D Nova. OK so that's only 2 pieces of software using the API but more will come and Daniel is working of a MiniGL wrapper so older software using it will be able to benefit from hardware based T&L in the future.

SI cards will be available for a long time (used, I know). Question what new systems will need Polaris cards ? AmigaOne X5000/20 (the only system you can buy ATM) ? How many are left to be sold ? Other systems (X5000/40 and A1222 are still non existent for those who want to buy one) ?

Not everyone will be happy to use second hand video cards and I can't really see anyone buying a complete system being happy about the idea of it being partially built with used components of an unknown history.

The huge delay in getting the A1222/Tabor to market makes it even more important to support newer hardware and there will also be a number of Sam460 and X1000 owners who are waiting for more software that takes advantage of Nova before upgrading their original 4650 or whatever to something compatible.

As if I was not aware of all this

You are an excellent PR but unfortunatley, you are still using the future tone, this damn future tone that we, in the Amiga World, translate for fun into "in two more weeks", but that is not fun anymore.

Actually, there won't be a huge difference between Polaris and Southern Islands cards regarding compositing. And I'm not talking about older R100/R200 cards, I'm talking about Radeon HD.

Warp3D Nova, I've already answered about this specific topic (yes two games).

Regarding Daniel's work : future tone. It's been in the work for months and months so don't hold your breath.

New systems ? AmigaOne A1222 will be out when Polaris cards will be unavailable and the only remaining cards will be Vega 56 and Vega 64 (and let's no talk about AmigaOne X5000/40).

I don't think many AmigaOne X5000 are being sold ATM so no need for newer cards.

Don't get me wrong : Hans' work is impressive but useless for the moment. Polaris cards won't bring anything new that we don't already have (and breaking the memory barrier will also be present in SI drivers).

And let's not talk about missing DMA in graphics.library for the X5000, thing that only Hyperion can solve (and which won't happen soon).

What will Cloanto's reaction be?

Cloanto always had a good relationship with the Commodore/Amiga companies, including Amiga, Inc., as well as with AmigaKit and A-EON. I see no reason why this should change.

Cloanto's wish and present working goal (not a future reaction) is a state where we are all better off. A healthy ecosystem of competencies, passion and support. Maybe a future that is leaner (we don't need all the hype, we've seen too much of that for years), hopefully more honest, with things done in the proper order, with fewer lawyers around, but with more people willing to stand up and express outrage when something isn't right?

But would Cloanto have eny interest in making AOS move forward at all, or are they more interested in selling emulators?

@Yssing

Maybe Cloanto hold the view that concentrating on the 68K market is the only way to make money out of the Amiga scene. Maybe they see support for the PPC hardware as insufficient to keep the market viable.

Can't see it that way myself. I'd rather design and build for new hardware, not stuff that's 25-30 years old.

@Cheese

So there is no chance that that Hyperion can lose the rights they were granted by the settlement agreement?

On the subject of an outcome more favourable to Hyperion. Remember how clear cut it was in the case between the Amiga parties and Hyperion. Oh, hang on, it turned out that the Amiga parties were in such a weak position that they had to go to the negotiating table and effectively give Hyperion what they wanted, continued control of the OS and access to relevant branding and a few more rights than they had before.

Given past experience I think it would be very naive to conclude that the court action will go one way or another.

We have recently completed the Radeon RX Polaris driver support for both 2D and Warp3D Nova which is great news for OS4

Why?
OS4 hardware is too weak to push 10 year old video cards, let alone newer ones and the api is waaay too simple and outdated to support features from the last 10 or 15 years as well.

At some point it becomes pointless. Much better idea to work on current drivers and apis. Adding newer hardware support adds pretty much nothing for OS4.

edit: ah, of course. Its a new product to sell. Thats the point.

the most welcome feature I'm hoping for is for the ability of the driver to limit graphics card power consumption and slow down the fan.
I really hate to have a helicopter starting each time I turn on my CurrentGeneration Amigas and to heat the room.

I sold my X5000 because of Hyperion. As long as Hyperion continues to do so, I will never come back to Os4.1. Enhancer is a very good way to make Os4.1 a bit more modern. A-Eon should take over the Os4.1 development, only then will I come back

A few months ago we had an Amiga Developer Team meeting in Cardiff. One of the subjects that was discussed was a hardware monitoring API. We have started work on this and it is progressing nicely. X-Dock will have DockApp which lets you control and monitor the Radeon graphics hardware and this will all feature in the Enhancer Software v2.

The latest X5000 hardware gives a very good account of itself when used with a modern Radeon Polaris graphics card.

I am sure from this statement that you are not aware of the developments of Warp3D Nova (modern Shader based 3D support) and OpenGLES 2.0 library.

Polaris is nice.

With the infamous Cow3D NoinfoBar-Os4Nova demo I get up to 1544 fps on my Sam460ex + Rx550.

I cannot imagine any new OS4 hardware that I would want to buy at this point, except maybe a PPC based laptop. But even then, only maybe. In my not so humble oppinion, it would make MUCH MORE sense to run OS4 hosted ontop of Linux (and windows, and macos), which then could function as a standardised HAL, providing the hardware drivers etc.

2D benchmarks

Rx550
http://hdrlab.org.nz/benchmark/gfxbench2d/OS/AmigaOS/Result/2086

R7-250X
http://hdrlab.org.nz/benchmark/gfxbench2d/OS/AmigaOS/GraphicsCard/522/Result/2067

Re 3D :
For Spencer an R7-250X is giving better results on the Sam460ex than the Rx550.
But the R7-250X also gives better results for Spencer than a R7-370 on my X5000/020

Really? That's odd.
Wouldn't have guessed it by the specs.
