Hello,

I've just bought Ubunutu Remix DVD from A-Eon (30€) in order to simplify Linux installtion on my X1000. It was complicated nonetheless but I mad it eventually.

Now I see that xeno74 has put a lot of work bringing Linux on X1000 up to date ( http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=3228) BUT how do we upgrade from Ubuntu Live DVD Remix to MATE 2017 ?

I cannot post on Linux topics on Hyperion's site (even if I own an AmigaOne X1000 and even if I'm registered...) so I'm asking here because I did not find anywhere a simple explanation of how to use/install MATE 2017 or upgrade from an Ubuntu Remix DVD.

@K-L

other than 16.04 you can install 17.04 remix too. This is the link to the thread:
http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=3554&start=120

As far as I know you can not easily upgrade 12.04 to 16.04 (if at all). I tried it a couple of times but got stuck.

It is less time consuming to just download the image you prefer (16.04 or 17.04 Remix 2017) unpack it and use

sudo dd if=the-image-you-downoaded of=/dev/your_partition_of_choice bs=64K

dd manual page

You should use GParted to check the partition and fix the size.

After that reboot and add an entry to CFE pointing to the newly installed Linux partition. Hope that helps. I'm away from my X1000 and the notes I made regarding Linux installation.

How would I install ubuntu for the first time, as using dd assumes you must already have a version of linux installed ?

Which is the easiest way to add linux to the X1000. There seem so many versions and so many options. There are images, initrd's etc. All I really need is a simple iso that I can boot from and then install linux. Last time I tried with AEONs boot CD it did not work with my RadeonHD 7550, do the latest versions ?

I thought Linux was meant to be a lean OS - why are the distros so huge. Some seem to be over 5GB.

I use satellite so no longer have speed issues but do have a bandwidth limitation so want to make sure I download the right things rather than waste my monthly bandwidth on something that will not work.

The Linux fora just seem to be confusing, some links do not even seem relevant to the AmigaOnes.

@BillE

Buy A-Eon's Ubuntu DVD Remix. This was the only option fo me to install Ubuntu and try it. Installing Linux on amigaOne X1000 is a real pain (much much more complicated than on PC)

I then could install MATE 2017 0.9 (don't forget to create 2 partitions on your hard drive) with dd.

And I then could be disapointed by Linux on X1000 (slow even if both cores are used, Ethernet chipset limited to 350Mbs, RX 250 not fully supported -> no 2D or 3D acceleration, sluggish interface...).

Well I spent the last days figuring out how to install any other Live DVD distributions and none of them work (whether I tried to install them by USB or DVD).

Do not forget that the kernel must be loaded from a USB key or a CF card (which will allow you to use the most up to date kernel).

Moreover, Ubuntu PowerPC support will be dropped in early 2019 so no repositoty after this date : installing software will become a lot more complicated due to dependancies problems.

Well I tried, I lost a lot of time (thanks xeno74 for your help ) and all of this to be disapointed by Linux performance on such a powerful (and expensive) system.

@All

New installation instructions for creating a MATE PowerPC Remix 0.9 USB stick.

For the X5000
For the X1000

Please note: There isn't hardware 3D acceleration available for Radeon HD7xxx and higher. You need a Radeon HD6xxx or lower. With Radeons HD7xxx and higher you also can't watch accelerated HD videos and your desktop isn't accelerated as well. The best experience you can get with Linux-PPC, is with an old Radeon HD6xxx or lower. We are looking for someone who can fix the BE issues with Radeon HD7xxx and higher graphics cards.
