@Kronos

There's also no formal written offer to provide source code with the binary.

That the drivers would be GPL, that's plain obvious.

The big part of the discussion was about the implications of using GPL-code on the rest of the OS. According to some only the drivers would have to be GPL, according to others, and I tend to be one of those, the impact would reach much further.

I guess it would take a (trustworthy) copyright-specialist to help us, and you, out.

Admitting no direct knowledge about this topic (like Kronos did in phrase I quoted) and yet repeating accusation of wrong-doing is a classic example of spreading FUD.

If ssolie/Hyperion did mistake regarding application of GPL, correction is easy and there is certainly no need for another Hyperion-bashfest.

Right, and one can only wonder why they would want to do inflict this on themselves, especially for an "example framework" intended to be used for others to build their drivers on as well.

This is exactly what BSD is for.

On the other hand, I am only happy to see Hyperion stumble through all kinds of self-inflicted legality problems.

@nubechecorre

When you watch the Amiwest presentations of the last few years, there have been a lot of announcements and release dates, that have never been met.

A1222, SMP, AmigaOS 4.2, bla, bla, bla... so many things have been said, but in fact not much has been released.

I really, really wonder, why Mr. Solie is still in charge of some tasks regarding AmigaOS. I was surprised, seeing him posting here - after all, I didn't see any activity at all the last years.

That's obviously my personal opinion.

@thread

My usual curiosity. I wonder how many people posting also took advantage of the offer:

Quote:
If you have a problem with any of this then please feel free to email directly at steven@solie.ca or give me a call at 403-912-1402 (MST) to discuss.

But I also find it curious though that what seems to be a legal discussion gives reference to consultation with a contracter, as opposed to Hyperion's legal director or their recently rebranded "board members". During the SDK discussion, a director replied regarding the event.

Source

Why is this current event not being handled the same way?

I didn't start this "Hyperion-bashfest", thats also on ssolie lashing out instead of just admitting (and easily correcting) the mistake he/they made.

You don't need direct knowledge to see blatant violations.

This would come down to whoever is distributing the files.

@thread

I think ssolies post somewhat backfired.

Rather than stopping the discussion, we now have 2 threads were the matter is discussed

Oh you mean the gloating ?

Yes there's probably some of that too

But knowing some of those people a little better, I know there's probbaly more than anything else genuine concern about the GPL.
libata would probably not have been available, let alone existed, if the GPL had not existed.

Defending the GPL, and the adherence to the GPL is more about protecting and defending whatever the GPL has enabled, than it is about bashing Hyperion.

As for bashing Hyperion ... well, I'm not exactly innocent, am I ? So I can't blame others for doing it either

I see this. I really hate when people turn a blind eye towards copyright violations when it suits their agenda.

And Birbo is right. Everything which was said on latest 5 or more amiwests in regards of plans about os4 never happens. The latest which make me smile was "announcement", about new SDK. It was like 2 more weeks, year or how much ago.

@Steven
Probably you not need to make any announcements anymore, they always fail.

And you need to say truth about new SDK promised on latest amiwest: no one will pay to anyone to make new SDK, and it will be done only and if someone will make it for free. Making some initial work on new SDK and to hope it will ready soon, kind of naive.
