| Just for giggles, I broke down and bought a Dell Inspiron 5150 and, following SnkBitten's guides, attempted to install my old copy of Amithlon on it.
I'm at the point where my drives are partitioned, and all data is copied over including the latest from his site, but... where booting "loadlin @amithlon" works fine, booting "loadlin @small" does not.
What happens is that I get a skewed screen. Best guess is that it's skewed roughly 8 pixels to the right. The actual skewed image appears to be the load kickstart screen, but it's hard to be sure because of the skewing.
Since loading @amithlon works fine whereas @small does not, I'm assuming either the smallird.gz file is pointing to the wrong place for my kickstart.
Clues appreciated. |

That insert floppy screen never looks right for me either. As far as I know that's expected.
DId you mark the partition as bootable in HDToolbox?
Edit: BTW, if you see the insert floppy screen then it found the ROM, It's not finding a bootable Amiga partition.
Or maybe you used a filesystem that isn't in ROM and didn't put the filesystem in the RDB?
It can also happen with kernel4 if you use the wrong arguments. It needs root=/dev/ram1 instead of ram0.

| Dammit, I think you're right, Wumpus. :) In all the chaos over this long weekend, I think I may have forgot to set the Amiga partition to bootable... Will give it a try when I get home from work. Many thanks.

Cool, glad that was it. I just saw the post and was going to reply when I saw Wumpus already answered with what my suspicions were.....a non-bootable partition. I've done the same so many times myself that it's now become that "check that you 'checked' bootable before you reboot" mental note flashing in my head when installing Amithlon.
I've got an Inspiron 5150 with Amithlon on it, the only real annoyance is the lack of a second "Windows" key for Control-Amiga-Amiga reboots.
I even have a wireless mini-pci network card that works with Amithlon. Last edited by SnkBitten on 05-Sep-2018 at 01:51 AM.

No, for Amithlon I only know the standard Ctrl+Amiga+Amiga, the PrintScreen Key+K and Printscreen+R. I don't have a Printscreen key either (function key+insert is printscreen).
I use AmigaReboot and have it configured in my WB menus. |

Yep. Rather than resurrecting my old 1ghz Amithlon machine, I saw that the 5150 was on your compatibility list and for $50 USD? Why not? I thought it'd be nice to have a portable, albeit a bit heavy, box I could take with me up to the mountains.
Now, what to do next... gotta do that patching and various other tasks. But I also want to set it up to boot into different versions of the OS with the ultimate goal of getting Amikit to work on it. Ages ago I had Amikit 3.8(?) working on it quite nicely.

That's something I've never done, I've always just used the 3.9 that comes with it and patched it up.
Amikit has always seemed fragile and confusing to me in WinUAE, but it looks great.
I should give it a shot in Amithlon some time. |

| Honestly, I've never had any serious issues with AmiKit, but then... as heavily as I use AmigaOS anymore? Hard to find any issues when you use it so lightly.
I did some searching on the All Knowing 'Net and did find where some people have managed to get AmiKit X working on it, so... that's the goal. We'll see how fragile it is then. :) |

By fragile, I mean it was easy for me to break.
There's enough automation and specific libraries that I seemed to have trouble maintaining the system manually like I normally do.
The system is probably fine if you take me out of the equation lol |

| I knew what ya meant, Wumpus. :)
Computers are, by their very nature, fragile. I mentioned I had Amikit 3.8 working on Amithlon a while back. 3.9, as I recall broke. Got too busy after that to try and fix. It'll be interesting to see what it takes to get X working on the 'thlon. |

Pedro Cotter on Facebook Amithlon page has Amikit X running on his Amithlon. He posted a few videos and a bit of the troubles he ran in to during the process. I don't think he ever put any definitive steps required to get it going though...

| I believe I've seen instructions for X out there somewhere. But even if I can't find them, I posted instructions on how to get 3.8 working on Amiga.org ages ago. Either way, I'll get there... :) |
