A bit of topic, but still Commodore related :)

I got an idea earlier this year that was to good not to try out.

So here it is, loadina Giana sisters on a C64 from a Vinyl record, pure magic! :)

@SydneyBloom

Way back. I think we are talking 80 something, I read a computer magazine, with one of those cheapo vinyls with a free game on. All you had to do was copy the content to a tape using a regular stereo.

Fun times... nahh..

@SydneyBloom

Around the mid nineties CU Amiga a small news item about using vinyl as a mass storage device that could hold more data than the other media of the day. It was of course the April issue.

@SydneyBloom

Similar thing was done on RetroManCave recently when a music album had a track for the ZX spectrum at the end to effectively do a "music video" in time to the actual music from the LP.

Wow! Nice!

Really unexpected data storage medium. What next? Clay tablets?

@Topic

Bascially good idea although coming late.

Vinyl lasts longer than Tape and I would imagine is also more reliable. With Cassette you had to be careful that the reader was adjusted right by rotating the screw, with vinyl this problem basically wouldnt be.

Of course there is one downside too, Cassettes are easier to store, and there can basically be endless amount of tape in a cassette.

Thanks for the information, I don't know about this, vinyl instead of tapes.

A local radio station here sent out programs for the C64 that you could then record and pop into the tape deck. Had it working myself. Different days then :)

@Englyst

I wonder what was the transfer speed back then.

I mean, if you think for example 1 Mbit connection, that would surely be faster than the radio broadcast method, but at same time, this 1 Mbit connection is limited to only one person, while Radio was broadcasting to many at same time.

If we then say that for example broadcast speed was 1 Kb/s, and there were then 10 000 people taking it, that would already make it 10 000 Kb/s = 10 Mbit connection. Although one way only.

It was very interesting idea doing it that way.

edit: just realised it definetily wasnt 1 kb/s speed, for otherwise you could have got C64s whole memory worth of stuff in just a minute, and it definetily wasnt that fast.

I don't remember what it was they sent over the air, or any details. It's so many years ago. But it worked and it's funny to look back at. :) I must admit I had not considered vinyl as a distribution system - kind of hard having it in your pocket compared to a tape, when you're going to a mates house to show him this new thing you just got. :D

@Englyst

There are even video vinyl discs and players available for that format.

Before the CD and the Video Disc there where "video vinyl records" in the 80th. :D

@thread

In the video the game is loaded using the MP32C64 kit through the datasette port. That kit was not available back in the '80.

So I am kind of curious to find out how this method could have worked back then.

Better yet what about on an Amiga? The A1000 has RCA sounds plugs (L+R)but I think they are just output, so they would not work. Would they?

If my memory serves me right, datasette transfer rate was around 50 bytes / sec.

The data tape speed is approximately 50 bytes per second.
