Amithlon on Amiga Kickstart and OS 3.1.4

With AmigaOS 3.1.4 recently released I figured I see how well Amithlon runs on the newer kickstart and Workbench compared to the 3.1 kickstart patched for OS 3.9 and Workbench 3.9.

A little effort, basically replacing shape.rom in smallird.gz with the A2000 3.1.4 kickstart and creating an installed 3.1.4 setup in WinUAE and then .lha compressing it to a file and moving that over to my working Amithlon system. Create a new bootable partition and decompress the files to it....then copying over what's required for Amithlon to boot/function and s:startup-sequence modifications...

Reboot the PC and launch Amithlon with the modified smallird.gz and holding both mouse buttons to hit the early boot menu and selecting the new partition to boot....

hmmm..opening the image in a new tab shows it...

A lot of configuring still to do....and I'll need to hide the 3.9 and 3.1 system partitions :)

Curious to see how it compares on 3.1.4 vs the 3.9.

@SnkBitten

That's awesome.

I already bought a 500/2000 ROM for mine but haven't got around to reinstalling it yet.

Interesting issue....battmem.resource and battclock.resource aren't compatible with Amithlon and trying to downgrade using LoadModule to the Amithlon versions still doesn't work.

So with Kickstart 3.1.4 on Amithlon you cannot save time settings. Every boot and reboot will require you to set your time from January 1, 1978 12:00AM.

Not an ideal situation. I wonder what has changed in those two resources. Maybe ThoR could add the necessary fixes so Amithlon can save its time again?
Best regards

Amithlon has a tool for poking around with the linux side... lxrun or something like that - you can use it for reading the hwclock (or linux system time) from an amiga shell script, to set amiga system time. If necessary you can also write to the hwclock using similar trick.

I had Amithlon installed long time ago,and am wondering if it works with newer versions of QNX or can ONLY work with the version on the cd ?
And is Dan Dodge still with QNX

@alanwall

Amithlon didn't work with QNX at all, that was the other package called AmigaXL that used QNX. I never played with AmigaXL as it was more like an emulator than Amithlon was.

Amithlon and AmigaXL shipped together but were two completely different things.

From basic reading it seems AmigaXL worked with very specific versions of QNX.

Doobrey supplied me new version of ROMSplit to test and I was able to split the stock Kickstart 3.1.4 ROM and replace the modules (battclock.resource and battmem.resource) with the Amithlon versions. Once the new kickstart was placed in to smallird.gz and booting I was able to save time again. Of course I slipped in the new intuition.library while I was building the ROM as well....so no more LoadModule in my startup-sequence.

Now Amithlon injects these resources anyway, so I may build a ROM just eliminating those two resources as well as scsi.device (not needed). Any suggestions on a small module (or two) that could go into a 512 KB kickstart that doesn't need battclock.resource, battmem.resource or scsi.device?

@SnkBitten

Technically you still have battclock and battmem, it's just that Amithlon is putting them into the >512K ROM area for you from those .bin files.

You can also ditch card.resource and carddisk.device because Amithlon doesn't have/emulate that hardware.

Is trackdisk required? It's not like you have the matching floppy hardware either.

I'm still thinking about what you could add though.

@Wumpus

Without Batmem, Battclock, card (resources) and carddisk.device, Remus reports 81,356 bytes free before compiling it..

And Amithlon won't boot without the card.resource and carddisk.device in ROM.

Recompiled a new ROM adding back in card.resource and carddisk.device but still leaving out battclock.resource and battmem.resource and Amithlon is booting fine.

I have to say, I do enjoy having my Amithlon mounting the shares on my NAS box as it makes it quick and easy to transfer files back and forth between my PC and Amithlon. Build the ROM (Amithlon), drop it on the share, replace shape.rom in smallird.gz (explore2fs.exe and wing-gz.exe) and then move the file back over to Amithlon. Dos mount the boot DOS volume and drop the new smallird.gz there and restart the PC.

No, he moved to Apple in 2016.

@SnkBitten

Interesting that it needs the card related modules.

Anybody know why that might be? I thought those only dealt with PCMCIA hardware.

One long shot is that you can put ROM into PCMCIA and A600 will look for it.

Maybe that is leveraged by Amithlon for some extensions?
