| Hi guys,
I'm considering making a few upgrades to my AmigaOne XE G3 800 MHz. It currently has 512 MB of RAM and a Radeon 7500 Graphics Card. I have installed a SATA-card and connected an extra HD.
Currently using AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition.
The computer is working well and is very stable, but I'd like it to be a bit faster. Emulation of classic Amiga is somewhat slow and many games stutter. Would be great if they would run as smooth as on the A1200.
Beside this, I'd like to be able to run newer games and software at a better speed or having them working (some doesn't work with my current config). Would a new graphics card make a big increase or will it not help much due to it only having a G3 CPU?
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for upgrades in terms of hardware and software?
Thanks in advance folks. Last edited by AmigaOldskooler on 04-Oct-2018 at 08:40 AM.

| G4 clocked back from 933 to 800, Radeon 8500 to 9250, Maybe Pro 9000. With extra 512 memory didn't start. Factory corrected.
This could help: http://www.intuitionbase.com
Then go with the GFX card first as FE supports or the new release. Place for the card.
If something works don't correct is my moto.
Faster mem and clock the GFX? Hopefully some better answers.
Personally would clock this back again and change the GFX card and for that the new drivers when ever there would be the new Net etc and printer drivers.
Good Luck with it and be carefull.

You won't be able to improve speed by very much, as the machine's speed is limited by the memory and bus speeds.
A more expensive graphics card won't do much for you because of the AGP bus speed (66 MHz). Fitting faster memory won't help, as it runs at the speed set by the DIP-switches. You might be able to change from 100 MHz to 133 MHz with the link on the motherboard (assuming it's not at 133 already), but that will increase the CPU clock by the same ratio and you will then have to reduce the CPU speed with the DIP switches.
Frankly, I wouldn't muck around with it. If it's stable now, fiddling can only make it become less stable. The A1-XE is notorious for its finicky behaviour.

| Yes the bus speed was the point too with the GFX and memory- No up to date AGP or the other slot.
Hype made me change the card and waiting. Feeling a bit...
In G4 You can click for more MHz, not recommended.
Nice programming wins allways in the A500 style. If we had some in these Power it could Shine again.
Emulation is bad for speed? Don't know.
Another Vote not to meddle if works. For eg could fire more for the NVidia in a pc in a proggy (sorry) but it makes noise and no need. Happy with that.
Just my thoughts, proggies and check the G3 , changed one prosessor G4 100 pins and made it fast but for what?

How much memory does this Radeon 7500 have? If it have less than 128MB of ram i would try to get another card if they are still available very cheap. i do not know how the 7500 performs, if they are similar to the Radeon 7000 i would upgrade ASAP.
I would also try to get more ram i guess even if it might be hard to find working modules for the XE.
What version of uae do you have? If you are using RunInUae from 4.1 FE you'll not have the version with JIT, it could make some difference when playing A1200 games.

| Thanks for the feedback everyone. The computer is nice and stable, so I'll take your advice not to fiddle too much with it to gain some more speed, except for maybe changing graphics-card.
@smf
Hi Smf,
Sorry, it turns out it is not Radeon 7500, but Radeon 7000. It has less than 128 MB of RAM. Which card do you recommend? Anything I need to look out for concerning compatibility? Thanks. _________________ Old School Game Blog Gaming on AmigaOS 4 Void - Amiga Demo Group |
