Hello

Yesterday I was searching for good and cheap 3.5 floppy disk for my Amiga 500.I want to copy some 100-120 aproximately floppies with such categories as Music Demo disks,Utilities and of course games.As I don't find nothing below 13 euros for a new 10 floppy disk box.

Can I find something better in price than this?

Are the range of prize between 13 and 15 euros the normal thing on these 2018 times we live?

I hope to find less expensive floppy disks on the web.

Thanks in advance

@newlight

Do they still manufacture them? Even if they do they are likely to be 1.44 MB disks not the 880kb disks compatible with a standard A500 drive. I've heard formatting a 1.44 MB disk as a 880 kb one (by putting sticky tape over the HD hole) leads to errors. I don't really know what you're asking. Is there some 'new' old-stock sitting someone going for peanuts somewhere? Probably not. Do AmigaKit sell them?

Here's some new Double Density disks (720kb on PC and 880kb on the Amiga). This is what you'll need but they are not cheap!

Here's 50 for £75 manufactured in 2010/11. You're not going to do better than that for reliability. Cost is going to be an issue.

@BigD

I know some companies on the net have stock of these floppy disks but don't know if someone still manufactures them.

Yes almost all are 1.44 floppy disks not the "most compatible" 880 KB ones compatible with the Amiga 500 drive.

I have loads of 1.44 MB floppies formated as 880 KB ones and never had a problem with them.

I only ask for new floppies for my A500 that's all.

I've done my bit. It's your money so "pay your money and take your choice". The data tracks on a 1.44MB disk do not physically line up correctly on a Amiga 880kb drive so you risk read/write errors when Amiga formatted etc but it's your life.

@newlight

The topic is finished IMHO:

'NEW' Double Density Floppy Disks are NOT cheap. If you want to buy second hand disks from some car boot sale buyer that swears they are NOS disks from 2010 then be my guest. If not buy the 50 disks for £75.00 which should be proper NOS stock from Amazon marketplace. At least you know they were manufactured in 2010/11 and will as reliable as you could expect them to be in 2018.

Really you should think about ADF and Gotek solutions instead of floppies in this day and age to be cost effective. Heck, even a Zip Disk solution would be better than 100 floppies!!!

@BigD

I still use HD and DD floppies to shuffle data between my Amiga computers from time to time even though I do have them some of them networked.

To be honest, nothing is more nostalgic or satisfying than hearing the physical Floppy noises. It's Mechanical Bliss :)

@Drewlio77

So do I, but I probably wouldn't buy any 'new' ones at this point. Even one of my NOS Zip Disks failed on me last year and that was still in its original wrapping etc!

No I don't know but I will check if I find time between buyings and this topic.

A question is will the 50 comes on boxes or as spare disks?

Becausem I prefer diskettes on its boxes

I bought some floppies from a few years ago from eBay. They were cheaper and more abundant then now. Very sad indeed.

I'm guessing they will come in a single big box as they were for industrial uses (described as embroidery, machine tool floppy disks ). Having read the comments they have a high failure rate for some buyer so you could expect as many as 15 bad disks out of the 50 it seems.

Some smaller quantities here and here. You could ask the sellers if they have more. I have about 50-60 new disks boxed but I am using them - they do come about on eBay from time to time in some quantity. They are/were used for Ataris, knitting machines and synthisisers amongst other things back in the day so some sell them for specific purposes.

Also check Amibay - if nothing for sale you could put a wanted ad on.

Vesalia also stock NOS DD floppies, but without boxes or labels. They're €11.90 for 10 disks, which isn't that bad, and far cheaper than £75 for 50. I've been using some of these a while now and have had zero problems.

If you're looking for that many though, it might be worth buying a large lot of used disks and formatting them yourself. They regularly go for quite cheap in the various Facebook user groups for boxes of 2-300, and while you might find a lot of them are bad, a lot of them will also be good too and will save you a lot of money for a bit of effort.

Used to buy 2000 disks. Can even repair them. In a good box 3M rules.

Safe in a box, not near any magnetic, monitors, speakers.

eg.

Firt hit in the net:

http://www.floppydisk.com/dsdd-dshd

The post is more to europe and there are nearer. Last time bought HD and formatted to 880. Works.

Then a cheap set was sold with a few hundred disks. Another A500 at the same.

Action Replay MK III Device , Deep Format, X-Copy shows errors in red. Used to have All Copy System.

Keep it clean. Used to swap some demos in Spain. Prefer 3M over the years.

Offcourse bought the best sw when there were some.

Gotek doesn't seduce me enough even if I don't know much about it and ADF is good for Amiga emulators I think.

I prefer floppy disks of course.
