sorry for video quality but it isnt a proper presentation, rather a proof of concept that it actually works.

note also that this is pretty much vanilla aros compile with mc68000 as target no particular optimizations. no lightweight icon set yet. no scalos as desktop which will probably be a better experience for the time being.

i also have not really had the time to show up any apps, just the responsieness and stability of the system as such.

i will link to a download as soon as we consider its worth testing by the audience.

@wawa

That looks very promising. I hope development continues so that classic users as well as Vampire users can avoid the Hyperion/OS3.1.4 debacle. It seems that anything Hyperion touches either enters a form of stasis like OS4 or gets embroiled in never ending litigation.

@wawa

really good start point. My intention will be buy a vampire V4 when available.
Aros is a really good Alternative OS that can will be the standard for the classic 68k machines in future.

I would want to see if and how good Magellan works as soon it is booting in RTG

Perhaps you could provide a link as soon it works

Thanx for your work

@tlosm

Do you really think a non amiga operating system could be standard on amiga?

Sure, a few people even run linux etc on amiga and a few guys will try aros but for most people will stay with amigaos on their amiga when they want to use amiga...

@monstercoder

Theoretically it is the only legal option because it offers network stack, USB support and so on by default

Coffin is completely illegal

Then there is only 3.1 standard setup

AROS has the advantage of compatibility with native Amiga software, you can mix and match AROS and AmigaOS binaries. You don't care about legal issues regarding AmigaOS, so I suppose you also don't support continued "official" development such as OS 3.1.4?

its actually not a question of legality, but also of educational value, maintability and possibility of distributed development among others. since amiga genuine os is (rightfully or not) treated as a commercial enadvour, where every insight into inner workings is jelaously guarded, aros may be actually treated as a way of documenting these principles of operation and gaining understanding about amiga hard and software. this already had been used to develop morphos. one could argue you cn also use leaked sources to do that, legal or not, but it doesnt seem to get anywhere. and most asm patches/reimplementations, while there is a number of them, remain simply in the area of isolated micropotimization and fixes for some obvious bugs.

that may well be, but the reason not to use linux obviously is that this is completely different system with a different philosophy and different pool of software, which is not widely available for amiga. artos runs amiga sofware natively. in practical terms it is simply an evolution of amiga system. much more than osx is an evolution of the genuine mac os and probably more related than current windows version relate to win3 or win95. also, similarly like morphos, it seems internally more alike the genuine amiga os than os4 for that matter.

@wawa

Running aros on the amiga will just make it slower and more unstable with programs that was made for amigaos.
And did i mention that aros is not amiga??

It's a total waste of time to maintain it.
Amigaos is okay as it is without anyone trying to copy it.
We who know how to do it must spend the time on the software.
I want more development tools.

@monstercoder

do you at least own vampire?

Funnily people are very active on forums commenting something they do not own at all

We understand that you are not interested in aros then why commenting it?

People can use aros or not

@wawa

Jelaously guarded, good formulation.

I have also noticed that Poseidon on AROS enjoys development that "real" AmigaOS version does not have. I would actually prefer if DOpus Magellan was "included" the same way. Anyhow, AROS works well on 68k now, that is a sure thing. I hope the IDE issue can be solved, as I want AROS to boot properly also on Minimig v1.1 and MiST(er), in the meantime it works to load scsi.device from "floppy" :)

Oh, and PeterK now also tests his icon.library on AROS/68k I believe, at least it works great on AROS as well.

The only thing you got right is the part about only caring about amiga, not aros.

I have:

A4000
A2000
A1200
A600
A500
CD32

Hopefully all of them can be vampire upgraded someday, except for the one i plan to sell.
But atm only two of them are ready for the future, guess which ones ;)

sure, to an extent, as long as it isnt improved enough. there is certainly work to be doen, but usually the software works and binaries itself run at the same speed, it is 68k after all, not an emulation.
and also you need to consider that os4 and morphos will have the same problem, only more severe. and you cant contribute to them if you are not happy with the situation, at least not as easily.

well, i was pretty sure you wont miss to mention it. no, aros is not amiga. and no other ng system is amiga. amiga is the computer it runs on.

its not a copy. it is an advanced, portable and backwards compatible reimplementation. if you are happy with what your kickstart 3.x provides, you dont need aros, thats for sure. and none will force you to use it.

btw, did i mention it that aros is compatible with the whole range of software for 1.x-3.x kickstarts? no kickstart switching necessary. isnt that a welcome feature?

be my guest. im not holding you back.

Heh, and since when do you care about amigaos? your boring posts about aros all over this forum where it does not belong at all.
I was simply just informing someone that for very obvious reasons aros can never be the standard os .
