| ..And after the "Talos II Lite (Power 9 mobo) $1400, AmigaOS MUST be ported to this!!" thread present on this forum, I'd like to report you all there's a new opportunity for AmigaOS with new Raptor BlackBird Power9 (4core upgradable until 22core) motherboard made for desktops (uATX board)!
https://www.raptorcs.com/content/BK1B01/intro.html
It has a price comparable to X5000 but it's much much faster (IBM Power9 with 4core) and could be a good option to bring AmigaOS4.x/5.x and run all things at "decent speed"

Great! Hyperion just needs to cease it's legal action, make friends with Cloanto and use the money to port to this instead! No brainer but Hyperion's business plan has been basically tread water for far too long. _________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." You're being generous to imply that they even have one. |

Trevor has a Talos II and has written an article about this machine on his blog.
http://blog.a-eon.biz/blog/
It can be found in the 22Dec post

| @billt I have a dual 8 core Talos 2. I will replace the now ageing x86 box my wife and I share for general computing with a Blackbird some time this year. That will make this house windows and x86 free.
I put the T2 in a NZXT Phantom case https://www.nzxt.com/products/phantom-white and even with all 5 case fans , CPU fans, and AMD WX7100 graphics card fan running it is quiet. The only time it is noisy is when starting up before the speed regulators kick in.
I really believe I should have gone for the 4 core CPUs because no matter how hard this monster is pushed it just keeps its cool and moves along. _________________ Tinkering with computers. |

| Basic Blackbird Bundle (4-Core CPU) $1,199.99 2U Heatsink Assembly for POWER9 CPUs $75.00 16GB DDR4 ECC Registered RAM (1x 16GB) $267.00 ========================================= Basic ready for use motherboard Total: $1541.99
AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition $35.00 gfx card $75.00 case and power supply $75.00 ========================= Basic AmigaOS 4 working system Total: $1726.99 *
*This does not include drives, cables, keyboard, mouse, etc.
This would probably be a nice system but only a few Amiga users would buy it at this price, especially without SMP and 64 bit support in AmigaOS. Higher quality and performance options can easily push this price over $2000 U.S.

Most (if not all) needed parts could be recycled. Your is worst case and anyway I can run Linux and others OS too, not only OS4 (if ever it will be true). _________________ Pegasos II G4@1GHz 2GB Radeon 9250 256MB AmigaOS4.1 fe - MorphOS - Debian 9 Jessie |

Fedora 29 for most everyday stuff. Debian ( from Raptor) for playing around with kernels, drivers, etc..
Soon BSD.

You have large capacity DDR4 ECC Registered DIMMs sitting around? You have a 400W+ micro ATX case and power supply sitting around? You are going to throw a cheap x86_64 heat sink on the POWER9 CPU?
I didn't even consider a cost for parts you could recycle. This hardware is not low end. It uses high performance and high quality parts which are more expensive than generic PC parts. My point was to show that this hardware has more hidden costs than some non-technical users might notice. It is a nice high end Amiga option but recognize it is not cheap and likely less than a few thousand Amiga users would buy it. It may not be profitable to even port the AmigaOS to it. More money was probably made by selling AmigaOS 3.1.4 68k than AmigaOS 4 POWER would generate.

The X1000 was over $2000 delivered. Then close to $200 for software, plus an additional HD, then a better graphics card, $180 for a Xorro card.... I have over $3600 into it, with only 2GB of RAM.

Interesting. Fedora running on the Talos Blackbird will make it a powerful and special daily driver.
I dont see OS4.1 being ported to the Talos anytime soon... This leaves us with a very special and expensive machine running Linux...

256 Gig of RAM is what you use to run a GP or Lawyer class Watson instance.
So, who is going to be first to mod the code so that instead of beating humans at highly variable unrestricted complexity of medical, legal, No limits Texas Hold Em, it learns how to beat humans at writing L4 style mathematically prooved explicitly defined compiler translators for all existing code?
Especially given the announcement that with a small tweak to teh AI code, researchers demonstrated a slightly slower restricted Watson running on a Pi Zero. And that wasnt even GPU assisted.
Finally, the actual next step in desktop computing capability.
At least you should be able to alter the CPU microcode to be able to handle the 16 Terrabyte plus XBar Static neurosynaptic RAM possible within a few years? Thats supposed to be DDR4 according to Intel? _________________ The older and more respected a scientist is, the longer it takes to prove him wrong. |

I agree, you have to buy for sure Blackbird mobo with bundled 4core power 9 cpu + heatsink + ram ecc registered, but all remaining parts "could" be eventually recycled from existing pc hardware. Of course you have to add amigaos cost, but t works also with linux and some other os.
I want remark one of the major features of Blackbird: the complete control we can have on every part of code, from bios firmware to linux os, there are full documented sources and anyone can update or improve everything, avoiding a premature platform die.
If we don't want became retrocomputing, the amigaos4 port for power9 must be done. ..Every time I asked for a port to another isa like arm or others, hyperion guys answered os4 is made for ppc and a port to another cpu is very difficult, so I repeat they have really no much choices.

For the time being. One person has ppc64be running in qemu on a LE linux OS.
As for AOS, the SAM460 in qemu should not be too difficult, and maybe even in the linux KVM. Check this https://www.talospace.com/2018/08/making-your-talos-ii-into-power-mac_29.html
However,,,, it's up to Hyperion/MorphOS guys to put in the work. I'll buy it, certainly for a price greater than $35, but I will not beg.

The blackbird is discussed quite intensively on the MorphOS forums already. though no official word by the MorphOS team yet. But I could imagine we may see a proof of concept *if* one of the "usual suspects" gets its hands on such a machine. Nevertheless, the current 32 Bit MorphOS is a bit too much wasting the machine's specs -no multicore, no more than 1.8 GiB RAM supported. But it could become a supported machine with future development path.
Nevertheless MorphOS still has plenty hardware and many of the G5 macs are supported already, are relatively powerful, are dirt cheap and on the long run the switch to x64 is still thought to come.
But it's definitely a nice and impressive machine - personally I havea bit mixed feelings regarding MorphOS on it. I prefer laptops and hence vote more for the fastest possible switch to x64. OTOH it would definitely be cool!
