@ne_one

no problem... you just need a couple of millions to buy the rights to amigaos, then you must hire a team of software and hardware developers and pay them fulltime, and you must design custom hardware or use something off-the-shelf. If you do custom hardware you must pay for the design and prepay for mass-production. And you need a concept why people should use amigaos and not linux, mac or windows

@Rob

I stand corrected then! It's really unfortunate because looking at these new Power9 for the desktop stuff that's coming out I really don't feel like buying an X5000 anymore!

@OlafS25

For me a reinvented "Amiga" would only need the original OS for a legacy subsystem and that could likely be replaced with AROS.

@Jose

SMP wouldn't happen without specific hardware support. Memory protection wouldn't happen without a completely different OS design.
As for the suggestion that Power9 would be at an advantage compared to x86 I can't agree as Power9 takes a huge hit in performance when protecting against Spectre and Meltdown.

3- Power9 being actually competitive on a per watt basis with x86, specially after the fixes for Spectre and Meltdown are applied.

Because Power9 is Spectre/Meltdown proof?

And yes, there's performance hit there too.

Interesting, that's not the impression I got from viewing that youtube video with those guys that made the Talos II. It was said that after the patches are made, X86 takes a big hit in performance/watt.

One is independent site which tests hardware, other is marketing video. Believe which one you want.

@Jose

From Phoronix, testing overheads using Linux 5.0: "The Intel Core i7 8086K performance was down by 17% with these out-of-the-box protections for Spectre and Meltdown. The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X performance with its default Spectre mitigations was lower by just 3%"
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux50-spectre-meltdown

The reason for this difference between Intel and AMD is mostly due to AMD not being vulnerable to Meltdown. The Power9 is however vulnerable to Meltdown with the associated performance loss.

I want to change my vote to RISC-V.

When i first heard about this i didn't think much of it, but as i continue to read about it and it's potential i'm liking it more and more.

Here's some info about, plus the opinion of a guy that i've come to respect.

@wiser3

I initially voted for ARM, but in light of recent developments I'm changing my vote to POWER.
