Just been watching the 8 bit guy - one of my favourite YouTube channels - and he is currently working on building his own machine. Now I know this isn’t strictly Amiga related but it is C64 related and involves Cloanto. Sounds like a cool idea and I know he will be successful as he has a great track history with his games Planet X1 through X3.

His plan is to build a sub $100 machine for coding and 8 bit in style. See here: https://youtu.be/ayh0qebfD2g He wants to use the original C64 ROM but has been unable to get in touch with anyone from Cloanto to license it. Does anyone know any contacts he could use? I think it would be so cool having a C64 style modern machine - just for fun 😊 Also this would be a good opportunity for Cloanto too.

LOL, respect for IP is not the high priority here...

He wants a proper license as he plans to build something and sell. I should probably go there and tell him to use Forth instead of BASIC, and that Kernal he probably has to make so many modifications to, that he can probably just rewrite it anyway...

@mcbone

It will be interesting to see if he gets a proper license, and how that will work out, I am a bit curious actually.

On the other hand, I think he will do way better without any C= code (and was it even Microsoft that made that BASIC?). It is such a pity that they put that BASIC language into almost every computer of that time.

Now I have commented on his video that he should use Forth. I have done my small contribution for a better world...

Unlike the incompatible, foreign computer that David Murphy wants to build (which has almost nothing in common with the Commodore 64), Dutch company Incramind Development, Inc. has already a working solution on the market. Dubbed the Ultimate 64, this machine is a real, 100% compatible Commodore 64 clone based on modern, off-the-shelf components. Since the internals are based on modern circuitry design, it ships with native HDMI and Ethernet-support, too - meaning you can hook it up to any modern tv and your home network. Of course, it fully supports just about every hardware peripheral out there - including cartridges, tape players and floppy drives.

@Petah

I have yet to understand how you build the case for Ultimate 64. The cases I find seems to be empty shells, where can you find a new keyboard?

@Petah

In fairness, David Murphy has said he wants to keep the price in the range of a Raspberry Pi. Whether or not that happens is anyone's guess, but I wish him luck.

BTW, thanks for the info, the Ultimate 64 looks like a lot of fun.

@Petah

To be fair he never said he wanted to build a C64 compatible computer. His goal is to make an 8-bit machine from off the shelf components in the price range of the Raspberry Pi.

Since Cloanto wasn't responding he said he would design the kernel from scratch. And seeing all the problems with licensing around the Amiga/CBM I think that's a wise choice.

@Nonefornow

Thanks - will pass that on.

Still probably needs licensing though?

Correct. Under $100.

@Leo

Seems crazy that Cloanto wouldn't want to be involved. A great way to earn revenue and not really do anything. The 8 But Guy has nearly a million subscribers and has sold a lot of C64 software was Planet X2.

I mean - why wouldn't you?

I would. I would also release Amiga and C64 ROMs for free for non commercial use.

But I'm not Cloanto/Amiga/Hyperion/Amino/Itec/InsertYourPreferredGhostCompanyHere :)

Seeing they are still fighting for an outdated piece of software written more than 30 years ago I'm not surprised they did not answer to the 8 Bit Guy. And I think that's better this way: everything that is more or less related to Amiga licensing always leads to fights, lawyers and nothing real ever comes out of it.

I know - daft isn't it? Why go to the bother of buying it/claiming ownership only to miss the opportunity to actually make some money out of it? You may as well make it free.

@Petah

So... I just priced that out (sticker price only, no taxes or shipping.)

155 Euros for a keyboard + 59 Euros for a case + 215 Euros for the motherboard = 429 Euros or 642 Canadian Dollars!

Holy smokes. I think I'll stay with my C64 Mini.

As for the original topic -- I'm not sure why 8 Bit Guy doesn't just embrace the Colour Maximite. It's cheap, runs really well, uses a decent BASIC (inspired by GW BASIC.) If he just wants the challenge of designing and building the machine, then I understand.

Maybe he doesn't know it exists? I didn't until you mentioned it.

He did have a requirement for HDMI though...

They must be involved somewhere. Individual Computers would need some license for the Chameleon 64 as it simulates a full 64.

So pretty much to what they are used to doing then.
