The Colour Maximite definitely needs more attention, it's a great little project!
8 Bit Guy definitely knows about it, because he posted a good video review of it. |

I do not know.
I mean anyone could buy a c64 and a 1541 drive and extract the roms without needing a license from cloanto.
Also winvice includes roms and it is free to download and to use.

So... I just priced that out (sticker price only, no taxes or shipping.)
155 Euros for a keyboard + 59 Euros for a case + 215 Euros for the motherboard = 429 Euros or 642 Canadian Dollars!
Holy smokes. I think I'll stay with my C64 Mini.
As for the original topic -- I'm not sure why 8 Bit Guy doesn't just embrace the Colour Maximite. It's cheap, runs really well, uses a decent BASIC (inspired by GW BASIC.) If he just wants the challenge of designing and building the machine, then I understand. |
And you need to add in key caps...
On the other hand, you get a new C64 and it has two drives built in and you avoid the troubles with the old video output it seems. Getting a second hand machine is not exactly for free today either (unless you get lucky).
Not cheap, but if you are really into this, it is sure good to have the choice. (And the price is lower than it originally was when mass producing it.)
Maybe it is because the Colour Maximite is a 32-bit system and he is the 8 Bit Guy?
I still want Forth! |

I'm definitely glad it's available. It makes a LOT of sense if you just replace the motherboard on your own old gear.
I only bothered to price it out because *I WANT ONE*! The sticker shock is I'm sure the same that my Dad felt back when he bought me a C64+1541+1702

He says he didn't go for the maximite because he wants the machine to be programmable using not only basic, but also assembly language and direct access to the hardware registers, just like you could do with 8 bit machines of the day. Or you could just get a non working but in good shape C64C for $60 or so and just replace the motherboard.

Gotcha. That makes sense.
I like the Maximite for myself because I'm never going to do any hardware banging. A fast and competent BASIC is good for me to play with.
But ... rather than order a Maximite, I am trying to teach myself Python for use on a Raspberry Pi |
