Hi all, excuse my ignorance, but could someone who's familiar with current EU copyright laws summarize this in plain layman's terms and how exactly it would affect internet content in the future? Also, how might affect US law? It seems to me that it basically automatically "licenses" pretty much anything a filter might deem currently not under copyright, then apply a copyright to the content, then require any website, no matter how small, pay a royalty? Thanks much!

@Amiga4000

So new laws are written so they can sue big companies with lots of money, like Facebook, YouTube, google. The result will be that most Europeans will be blocked from most US servers and web sites. And finally the internet as we know it will be gone.

You get sued if you have keeps records of customers, and most really be careful about what data you collect and how that data is used, if the data is used for spamming, you be burned on the stake.

@Amiga4000

If anyone is smart, Europe will be cut off from the Internet in their own little nutty network

Knee jerk reaction much? This copyright directive is a good thing for large US corporations, and bad for the rest of us.

Exactly, no one will be able to apply the required filters except the huge multinational companies.
Also, I think this is being done for political purposes, to combat the so called "extreme right", but they're affecting everyone. No one single person will be able to make a community site/forum about anything anymore, it will all be owned by big tech which is in bed with the EU legislators.

@Jose

I do wonder if its a way for governments to try grab back control over media, so they can control who people talk with about what, with mainstream media losing popularity, due free sources of information not controlled by the governments. I'm guess the old boys dream of returning to time where there was only one TV channel and it was owned by the state, and when it was played by people.

@Argo

Matrix site will, then, go offline if article 13 is implemented. I am sure that somebody “copyrighted” the word “Matrix” along with the movie :S

It's almost certainly trademarksed but you can't copyright a title. Thus if it were to go offline for legal reasons it would have happened already (or may still happen in the futire I guess but not as a consequence of the EU Copyright directive)

It's 'good thing' for "rights owners" and 'bad thing' for large corporations like google and facebook who currently profit from the co[pyrighted work of others without paying the royatities. (Though actually they do have agreements with various rights organisations like PRS etc, so it may not even make much difference , just require the agreements to be made by law).

It won't really affect the rest of you at all.

It be bad for anyone who won't share anything on facebook or youtube. Like todays slogan or put videos on youtube where might background image of a drawing something someone else made, copyrighted or anything that might be copyrighted in background be scrambled in fare of youtube or facebook being sued for the use of copyrighted material that might be uploaded by random people who want to make video blog. All ready you see this with music on YouTube, where it's almost impossible to make video blog, and you spend days trying to find a few songs, youtube video in future will boring as they all will have the same music to avoid insane copyright fear (most youtube videos probably will have only songs and music agreed by the governments, it probably be song about how great the EU is).

you also end up where you can't share your own work, sa might look too much like someone else art, or it might be secured by mistake. and you have fight to provide evidence the art is made by yourself, in order to share it, but it be little point as not many will see it.

in the end the internet will be internet of nothing interesting.

Image not being able to do reviews because, your not allowed to use picture of product your trying to review. in your blog post.

Well, well! I just noticed this thread after uploading a new cartoon to YouTube! Since it uses a copyrighted song, I was afraid it wouldn't fall under fair use, and it doesn't!

This resulted in an automatic copyright claim (within less than a minute) and my vid being auto-blocked in America, but didn't really get ME into trouble, like taking down my channel or suing me!

I should still be able to make cartoons, but it may be limited where I can show them! It isn't quite so bad if YouTube and facebook get sued as they have lots of money to pay damages with, while casual animators like me, do not!

It's a good thing for those large enough to have resources enough to do the filtering needed, it's a bad thing for those not large enough to have such resources. Meaning - it is very good for the established giants, and very bad for startups and small community sites, like for example - this one.

It's bad for mid size companies. Startups and small companies are freed from the filtering.

Or you could try not violating copyrights. Either pay for the rights to use copyrighted songs, use freely distributable music, create your own or get someone to do it for you.

And remember, when you put a video on YouTube you are publishing it worldwide, so be prepared to pay for worldwide rights if you want to use copyrighted material!

Are you sure? From what I understand, any service older than three years is no longer a startup, regardless of size (revenue).
