I don't think that's Amiga related. _________________ Sent from my Quantum Computer. |

I Know that reading is hard but this is on General technology. And it's description says "This is the place to discuss about computers and technology in general." |

Preciselly. Thank you.
@DiscreetFX
These days many amiga users have been talking about a new Quake 2 port, so I thought it would be good to bring this news here, to compare, because if many wrong things didn't happen, we would be leading this graphic revolution, I even remember a demo (sadly don't remember the name) which showed a realtime raytracer. But as we are now, well, it is sad, very very sad.

Neat video. I wonder how the nvidia RTX compares to the AMD Polaris that will be supported in AOS 4. I'm rusty on graphics cards, so I'll have to research it.

I mean the real question is "Can Amiga OS4 reach a more realistic 3D rendering GPU based"
IMHO for the moment NO
The demo said that it path tracing** and ray tracing
I am certainly the only one that have tried to port a simple raymarching* program to GLSL Nova : I must admit it was buggy certainly due to our GLSL implementation not mature enough. (signaled to Hans but I didnt do a bug report as I dont have access to Mantis... also I dont have the latest Nova )
So I only can draw 2 raymarched spheres on a background with GLSL/GPU Each time i tried to do a more complex scene bugs appears with no reasons Was so disappointing
Alain
Note: * raymarching is not the classic raytracing but an other GPU technique that compute procedural 3d objects based on their distance to a current xyz point
** path tracing is just an other algorithm that is implemented upside the raymarching or raytracing or raycasting routines to manage how the light ray reflect. I mean once you have a routines that return the normal & the color/material at a given xyz point then you can build a path tracing routine
Certainly the quake implementation use better techniques/GPU not accessible to our Amigas

Well, get Mantis account :) It takes a couple of minutes and then you can start tracking bugs.

| Beautiful is NOT the word I would use here, not just for Quake but for every 3D FPS game the industry has forced on us. Jerky ? Probably. No matter how many CPU/GPU cores and GHz, to me they all look like the terrible 3D attempts (for all platforms) of the 90s, the Tomb Raiders, the Monkey Island 4, the Dooms/Quakes/Glooms/whatever, the fake Mickey Mouse in crappy 3D cartoons our kids have grown up with. And that's coming from someone that has enjoyed quite a few of 3D games/demos (ugly or not, pseudo or real). I liked Unreal Tournament, played Quake, loved PacMania, just not as much as good old 2D games. Give me Pong any day.
