Syntax Highlighting editor for AmigaDOS projects

Hi all,

I'm working on a few script projects, and am looking for a OS4-native editor that can do syntax highlighting of AmigaDOS scripts, and also if possible AmigaGuide documents & Installer scripts. I'm currently just using MultiEdit which is a perfectly usable editor, but something that could do syntax highlighting of these file types would be a big improvement.

Any recommendations ? I have VIM from OS4Depot but the syntax highlighting doesn't seem to work with the terminal emulation in AmigaShell. Willing to consider commerical options if there are any.

Thanks!

-Mark

Try Codebench by Simon Archer. Full IDE, native OS4 build, uses OS4 SDK, etc, etc. Best ever.

Available from https://www.amigaos.net/software/30/codebench

Annotate

It is easy to add your own syntax definitions for the file type you need.

It is the best ever. But it has that startup delay you can't buy away yet to my knowledge. And it can be over complicated. For example I just wanted to edit a text file with it, but it wants to set up a project, for a C program.

BTW the download link is broken.

I can't use this. Downloaded it and installed. But I load in a fle and there is text missing. I also can't see any scroll bars so it looks a but basic to what we are used too.

It's not native but try Cubic:

https://www.softwareandcircuits.com/division/amiga/products/cubic/download.html

There is a demo. It can be still purchased.

(Installation with the latest OS4 SDK is not straight-forward but it can be done after install script modification.)

I'm sure Codebench is nice but the slow startup is a no-go for me. I just want a good editor, not that much IDE.

Thanks all for the suggestions!

I have downloaded them all and am trying them out. CubicIDE (GoldED) seems the most promising at the moment, it natively understands AmigaDOS, Installer and AmigaGuide format files and the editor component seems snappy enough. It also should work on OS 3.x as well which will make switching between machines easier.

I agree about the hassle with SDK installation, but I'm not (yet!) attempting any C projects, so will tackle that hurdle later.

Strange, works fine for me. I use this editor on my WinUAE + OS4.1 FE Classic setup, because CodeBench is too sluggish under emulation.

A broken installation maybe? It definitely has scrollbars and all. Totally configurable, too.

Text missing? Do you have a file with a null-character somewhere? That might cut that one line short. UTF-16 textfiles has a lot of null (every other byte for normal english text) so it would not show a lot of those sadly.

It actually has two scrollbars. One on the left that shows where the cursor is, what area is marked, jump points and current changes. A bit like Visual Studio, but 20 years ahead

By user demand, it also has a "normal" feature-less scrollbar on the right. They are both configurable.

@Deniil715

Can you suggest a straight forward way (however many steps) to solve the problem of seemingly random "no text displayed"?

*Usually* If I stay in the editor and OPEN the file (I always start from the command line via annotate ) again it will then display the text.

It might be. I just unpacked it into RAM and it seemed fine. I don't know if it's the colours or background or missing icon bar but when it's working it still looks too basic.

There shouldn't be. It was an AmigaE source file. All the MODULE filenames were missing.

I see it on the left now but the right just has a giant size gadget. That throws me off. I like to see the scroll bar sitting neatly on the right.

Where would I find it? I enabled Config/Appearance/Right scroll bar. But it asked me a question I said no to. And the bar didn't show up.
