I was following Tabor actively and even reached out to a friend in Australia to help me order (to the states) the same case that Epsilon got for his Tabor.

http://amigax1000.blogspot.com/2016/02/new-case-for-amigaone-a1222.html

That case I received maybe three years ago. It's been on the shelf in its box, and I can't say that I actually imagine an A1222 ever going into it. Not that getting the thing designed, built, drivers written, and shipped is an easy task -- I understand that it's not.

But, I'm basically not thinking about the Tabor anymore these days, sadly.

AFAIK it's something like:

Trevor has bought ExecSG, AEon is just a company owned by Trevor and some other guys.

This might be seen as a nasty detail, but if AEon goes bankrupt, Trevor could still owns ExecSG.

There would obviously be a significant delay if a new SoC was chosen.

After so many years?

It is not clear whether Hyperion are in any position to continue AmigaOS development with no license to ExecSG.

Hyperion has a license for ExecSG. Non-exclusive.

The Tabor is required to be sold to recoup development costs

I think that customers would pay a bit more to have a more modern SoC, which is also much more compatible.
Quote:
and some software has already been optimised for the SPE.

You can throw it away, because it's not needed anymore with a more standard PowerPC SoC.
Quote:
The main issues with AmigaOS is the install base, lack of software and price of hardware. Tabor can help with two of these and a redesign would mean the boards would have to be significantly more expensive to cover costs

If you split the development cost to, let's say, 1000 (new) Tabor, the cost will not raise so much.
Quote:
meaning we'd be better off buying a X5000.

Too much expensive for what you get.
Quote:
Like it or loathe it we stuck with the P1022 SoC for Tabor and in the big scheme of things it's no big deal IMHO.

Then be prepared to have obsolete software in a few years, with GCC dropping SPE support.

It's already obsolete now. Infact, the latest SDK hasn't even caught up with it. Unless it's a manual download and I missed it.

My X1000 has GCC 4.2.4 and GDB 6.3 which doesn't work. GDB broke in some SDK so debugging doesn't work.

I don't know how much they spent on R&D for Tabor but say it was $90,000 and a new T1023 design cost another $90,000. That's $180 on every board instead of $90.

It's a bit more complex than that since there are a number of factors that will come into play.

Some developers have already said they don't plan to compile SPE versions of their software while Dan is pretty enthusiastic about Tabor and seems to be compiling all his current software for SPE.

Some software won't require updating once it's completed.

Old versions of GCC won't just stop working or disappear off your hard drive one day and some developers will continue to use an older version if they feel the need to continue compiling for SPE. This is more likely with developers whose only OS4 machine is a Tabor but see below.

There will be software that never gets compiled for SPE because it simply doesn't need the extra speed benefit. EntwicklerX released a demo video a little over 2 years ago and it shows that the current trapping and emulation (apparently an improved version was being worked on) is sufficient for ScummVM, EUAE and playback of 720p AVIs.

Heck, I still check the WinUAE website once a week hoping for a new version....Come on, 4.2.1!

We'll there are other computer platforms out there. The Tabor is blatantly part of a scrabble for new users and if it sells you'll have more potential sales

If it doesn't you basically have a dying platform senario

I guess you'll have to support Tabor with the obsolete toolkits then?!

I personally don't get so excited about software 'updates' as I'm used to Apple removing as many 'features' as they add, and backwards compatibility is important to me. e.g. Bye bye iDVD after the next macOS update

@sinisrus

sounds quite a good plan. perhaps the community would indeed be interested in another SAM460 run, especially if the cost was a little lower. at this rate they might even beat the A1222 to market. who knows?

@eliyahu

Yeah why not resurrect the LimeBook while you're at it or re-engineer the A500 or reconstitute the MOS fabrication facility .

There is no going backwards, progress waits for no man and for most tasks the A1222 IS progress IMHO.

Very nice, but little use for me. I already have PPaint and Enhancer. Ordering it just to pre-register for Tabor is no go for me. But I'm sure there will be many interested and second option (20% deposit) will be cancelled

...still, congrats to all involved

ES 2.0 - is there the key feature that many waiting for?

@AEon

Does it mean that those five test boards are made and OK?

@mr2

Can’t you sell the licences, or isn’t that allowed ?

I know these are linked to my Amisphere account, but it is easier to sell an Amigaone with the licenses and buy a new Tabor with software/licenses imho.

@Everblue

When i check, A1222plus.com it is showing an empty page with a link to amigakit store.

And the link to Amikit store is not working.... so no ordering yet...
