@TrevorDick

So the X1000 started a bit earlier than I thought and there was some beef between PaSemi and Varisys ("previous minor payment dispute") added to the mix.

Still lots of "DeadEnd" signs that would have made anybody just seeing it as business cancel the project.

Now I do understand why you went on with it and I'd even say that you learned some of it's lessons when doing the X5000 (still to much of "everything and the doorbell" but thats just IMO) so it was (and still is) so much surprising that Tabor was/is done in the way it is.

Sure it might work in the end, but just think about what the time/resources used by that trampoline-code could have done to other related projects.

Hence me having issue with some people trying to paint you as the next Steve Jobs/Jack Tramiel/etc.

I would really like to be able to buy a (near) fanless PPC desktop, preferable in a small form factor but Tabor just isn't cutting it in the way it was done.

Actually, depending on how you like to interpret the word "most", Trevor did mention that about half of their machines buyers have never used Amiga before. I personally thought before that there could maybe be a couple of new users, but I thought it would only be marginal, but based upon this, it seems there could be surprisingly big market from new Amiga Users.

50% now?? Quite honestly, I don't believe it.

@Kremlar

The actual quote from the latest interview:

Quote:
Talking about the USA, some statistics from sales of X5000 suggest that 50% of the buyers had never owned a next-generation Amiga before and 50% of those had never even had an Amiga in the past.

So 1st, he's only talking about the U.S. sales.

2nd, "some statistics" "suggest" is not the same as saying "50% of all U.S. sales are..."

The data comes from Aaron at AOTL who is a USA Amiga retailer and represents all of his sales of AmigaOne X5000 systems.

@TrevorDick

Nice to see such an interest from the outside of the Amiga bubble. I´m sure lower priced hardware (Tabor) will be even more appealing.

@Kremlar

50% of 50% is 25%
That means a fourth of the US buyers never owned an Amiga before.

@pavlor

Well the only way the community can increases, is people where confident that AmigaOS works, and to do that we need to be able to JAIL buggy / resource hungry programs like web browsers. We need hypervisor layer, and we need AMP and AMP+SMP, and we need lots of drivers, or we need to start thinking differently about drivers, standardize on chipsets limit workloads for developers, another possibility build virtualized layers, that might have access to hardware layers like USB or PCIe, use none native drivers. All that can be possible with a hypervisor layer,

so I think hypervisor layer, should be priority one.
And then guest operating systems.

Guest operating system might also include different version of AmigaOS with incompatible changes.

Thanks for correcting that.

@TrevorDick
And thanks for clarifying that.

@all about half sales data
Regardless of the wider applicability of the data, and if the method used was how good, it is still an interesting piece of knowledge, which could suggest we already have a much bigger market than we are expecting there to be.

Interesting read, thanks.
Something of an 'outsider' in the goings on of new hardware these days, and boy am I glad. Five years ago the prototype boards were made? The interview mentions years of 2012, 2015, 2016 as if they were weeks ago. There is slow, then there is slowwwww.

It is a long time in real life but an eternity in computers. It is little wonder so many "NG" users are getting bored. I turned out of it a long time ago and for the sake of
my sanity I'm glad I did. I will continue to use my A1200 running 3.x in the meantime.
If an affordable machine comes along one day so I can finally retire it, then great.

Thank you for the link, I had to scroll down further than I had expected to find the following nugget:

Quote:

A big benefit of AmigaOS is that, unlike Linux, it doesn't use systemd. [..]

I was sort of anticipating that one... LOL

And this:

Quote:

Between Windows becoming a spyware OS, Apple dumbing down their OS and only selling sub-par hardware at luxury prices and all the various Linux groups still working basically against each other after two decades instead of working together...

Well, lots of fun reading for those with some spare time...

Yeah, just look at that bunch of fools.

They should definitely take a leaf out of our book!

Actually don't look at the last page of our book. Or the one before that. Or the one before that. Also scrap the one before that.

Hmm hang on, let me find the good pages first. I'm sure there's group harmony in here somewhere!

Ok no group harmony.

But we do have some good eggs at least! And if anyone is a good egg in this scene, it's Trevor Dickinson.
They don't have a Trevor Dickinson over there on LINUX. Never in my life have I seen a man wear Penguin shoes.
