Hello.
Are there any tutorials on how to make the pieces for a game using Hollywood?

@Trekiej

There are some in Hollywood forum Tutorials section:
https://forums.hollywood-mal.com/viewforum.php?f=11

Some of my own tutorials:

https://forums.hollywood-mal.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=925 (Check second last reply on first page)
This is for total beginners teaching Hollywood by making simple PONG-game.

https://forums.hollywood-mal.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=979
This one is continuation for the previous PONG- Tutorial

I also made couple of Youtube videos regarding using Hollywood with Designer. In Part 3 I was actually showing how to make a simple Point n click adventure game. I unfortunately ran out of trial time with that software, hence I never got it completed, so it is only half way done:

@Bugala

Thanks, I did go by there later. I will look into those links.
Hollywood MAL still is an amazing piece of software.
I wander how well it works with 64bit cpu and smp.
I would love to see it work with Aros 64 bit smp.

@Trekiej

Eons ago I did this. Just an extremely simple tech demo, but working (almost) fine...
I could send you some code, just to tinker with it...

@g0blin

Thanks, I would have to admit that I do not have Hollywood installed yet.
I tinkered with the demo a while back.

@all

For whoever interested, the demo can be found HERE

Please note that:
- the demo is for non-commercial use only, since it sports proprietary assets;
- it was written years ago (with Hollywood 4.5), so some constructs may seem naive to someone;
- it is fully working per-se, but it is not a complete game, since you can only control Sub-Zero and with a very limited range of moves;
- the archive contains the full source code, together with graphics and musics. It can be compiled for any platform, provided you use the necessary plug-ins.

However, it is a fully functioning game engine and can be easily expanded to turn it into a full-fledged game. The game uses sprites, and this can lead to flickering if run in full-screen mode. If I were to rewrite the code I would use double-buffering today, but it does what it is supposed to do.

Enjoy

@Templario

I always would of liked to have seen a S.E.U.C.K type game engine update made for Hollywood. (Only classic users will know what I’m on about!)

@amigang

I would have thought someone could have done a clone with AMOS easy.

Anythings gotta be better than Backbone.

By all accounts, the original SEUCK for the C64 (by Sensible Software) was really good. The Amiga variant however was not - and many games made using it on the Amiga all followed the same format with the same inherent flaws and issues.

It was a similar problem with many of the AMOS games that were released (although most to be fair were PD and not great examples of what could be done on the machine).

I think the biggest issue with a game engine like that is simply the limitation that one genre has. There isn't a large scope for making a vertical / horizontal shoot em up vastly different to anything that has been done before it if using an engine like SEUCK.

Is there an OS4 port? I tried the 68K version but got an mpega error. 🤔

@Hypex, Trekiej

Hello guys,

I haven't tinkered with that code in a long time, but it should run on any system, since it does not require many resources.

If you are running it on OS4 you need to put inside the game directory the relevant plug-in for playing mp3 files (AVCodec_Plugin). Such plugin, which "enables Hollywood to load and play many video and audio formats supported by the FFmpeg library", can be downloaded freely HERE.

Since I originally coded it on a PC, the character movement may be slow on an Amiga, but you can always modify the movement routine in the source code.

Sadly, I never tried it on a 68k machine for lack of original hardware.

I hope to have time to get back to it over the week end. Let me know how it goes
