Hi All! I've been trying to figure out the best way to archive music midi files created in Dr T's back in the 90s... I have an A3000 That runs DrT's and can open the files. I can easily save them as Midi files. Looking for an easy way to copy them for use in any Mac or PC. Is the best way to install an ethernet card so I can get on my LAN, or is there a way to install a USB thumb drive or CF card reader??

They are super small I'm sure... Probly fit on a few floppies! But I don't have a way to read them outside the Amiga! lol

I started trying to re-record the files into ProTools, slaved to the Amiga... it works, but would take a year!

Maybe something like Amiga Explorer may help you?

Too bad you don´t have other computer with FDD.

It is far easier to do such Amiga-PC transfers with A1200 (PCMCIA, IDE), there are (expensive) LAN and USB cards for A3000, but I think AE will be sufficient.


Edit: What about cheap USB floppy drive for your PC?

Surely Amiga MIDI files are interchangeable with MIDI files generated on other platforms?

They would be, I think this is purely a file transfer issue.

As long as they are in the SMF format, they should be.

Just remember that both the USB floppy solution and the ZIP disk solution require that the disks are formatted for PC - which in turn means you have to be able to read/write PC disks on your A3000.

You don't write which version of AmigaOS you are using, but if it has CrossDOS, you are probably okay (you may need to look around for a correct mount file for the PC ZIP disk to be mounted on the Amiga).

If not, maybe the Ethernet card/LAN solution is still simpler and gives you added value in the future.

Well, or AmigaExplorer, if it's just for this one task.

Simple options could include:

If the A3000 is net enabled, simply LHA and e-mail the files to yourself

Or you can pick up SD card IDE-HD interfaces to use an SD card as an HD. These can easily be configured on a PC using WinUAE, connected to the Amiga and have the files all copied to that.

I have bought a few of these interfaces with 16GB SD cards to clone and salvage my old IDE boot drives from my A4000. The SD card was then checked and booted from in WinUAE and can easily be fitted to the machine to replace the failing drive it originally had.

If you have CrossDOS (which I believe only came with WB2.x and 3.x) then you can easily format some DD/DS 720K floppies and transfer that way (but that relies on the PC having a floppy drive, which all modern ones will not any longer short of using a USB floppy drive.

Other than that there are the CF IDE HD adaptors which can also be used in the same fashion as the SD card adaptors.

Failing that, if you have a CD burner in the Amiga, use a CD-RW (or CD-R although the file size would make using a CD-R overkill), and burn the files to a CD (which can then easily be read on the PC side).
