So they claim that heat transfer paste killed your board? Odd.

I have to admit that I'm waiting until finFET cards are supported before I upgrade my X1000.
They run so much cooler and with much less power usage than pre-finFET cards.
I hope that drivers for them are on the horizon sometime soon...

@JimIgou

First observation was :

"I have had a good visual look at the motherboard and found there is a fluid like substance in random locations around the board. There is also alot of debris and particals covering the board. The fluid seems to be concentrated around the CPU, PCI-E x4 slot and main power control I.C."

I will, although it may take a few weeks for me to be able to sit down and organise the data.

I've decided to leave the survey open for the time being, because I'm busy with other stuff. No point in closing the door when I'm not ready to analyse the data yet...

AFAIK, cards like the Radeon RX 550 have GPUs manufactured using 14nm FinFET technology. The RadeonRX driver works with those.

My Sapphire Radeon RX 560 also uses 14 nm FinFET technology, and I can confirm it runs pretty cool and quiet in my X5000.

@Spectre660

So is the service person implying you have spilled liquid across your 2000 EUR board and covered it with debris?

@Spectre660

I should read more carefully.
What IS a "fluid-like" substance though?

Remnants of a dried fluid?
What fluid then?

And debris?
Has the tech looked at the average computer motherboard?

They are usually a dusty, partical covered mess (which is why I have a mini vaccum with a flexible hose).

Anyway, hoping to have better luck should I buy an X5000. Still holding out for the X5000/40 though, as it still won't perform as well as my 14 year old PowerMac G5 Quad (but at least the core count will be the same).

And I'd like to support Treavors endeavors at some point, since I've been offering my unsolicited opinion for so long (and he's good guy, even Bill Buck seems to think so).

BTW - I'm rather jealous of you guys with the RX cards (and the capability to use them).
Mark Olsen on the MorphOS development team has mentioned owning an RX570, but so far we don't have drivers for any GCN video card.

@Hans
AmigaOS 4.x PPC with Amiga-Forever 2016 and nVidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti :p

It's good to see support for Radeon RX cards.

@Spectre660

Liquid on the motherboard? Red heat transfer paste...

My heat transfer paste is near OEM gray on my Intel Core i7-7820X CPU...

@Spectre660

GCN4, eh?
Then we have GCN5, Vega.
And finally GCN6, Navi.

After that, supposedly something new, but then Navi was originally rumored not to be a GCN series.
GCN with ray tracing capabilities.
That will be something.

BTW, Mark already has his RX570 install in a PC, I assume you mean your card awaits installation in a PPC based system.

Hans has been quite an asset for your community.

He really ramped up graphics support.

And I've read everything he's been providing.

Nope.
Cards came out of PPC systems .
Will go into AMD machines .
My PowerPC days have ended .

@Spectre660

At least they accepted the board to try. My used x1000 has a PCI slot damaged during shipment (big drop and a heavy gfx card heatsink) and they refused to even look at it to replace the slot. I'm on my own, but at least I have it, and as far as I can tell everything other than that slot still works.

@billt / @Spectre660

considering the cost and tiny community, these stories of poor warranty 'service' do not sound terribly encouraging -- especially considering the contributions Spectre660 has made over the years.

That is kind of rough. There seem to many short straws out there .
Actual after sales support now looks limited generally.

@eliyahu

I would really like to know exactly what component(s) on my board failed .
And I am sure that every owner of an A-Eon board would be interested too.
That knowledge could allow them to protect their boards from possible similar failures in the future .

@Spectre660

Oh my!
Well, since you have been a real asset, you could stick with the MorphOS community.
I'm not sure old Apple PPC hardware is much more reliable, but I have a G4 MDD that is running flawlessly that must be over 15 years old.

Obviously you no longer have an X5000.

But we are supposed to move to X64 hardware.

In the meanwhile, Ryzen is my next choice for a PC, as I've been using AMD cpus since the K6-III.

So what was the tech comment on your board again?
"Fluid like substance..."?

Man, I know you and I just can't picture you abusing your hardware.

In a situation where we need to solidify the OS4 userbase, every user that walks away means a bad loss. I haven't got the foggiest about what happened to Spectre's machine, but I would certainly expect more interest and perhaps a more considerate attitude. Retaining a happy customer is much more important than saving money on fixing the board.

@Trixie

I did requested a quote for non warranty repairs.

Response :

"I could not give any estimate at the moment. Even if we were able to get it working, we could not gaurantee its long term reliability due to damage."
