@Lou

This is surprising news, given that it's not even Pi Day!

It certainly exceeds expectations. I was expecting a Cortex-A55-based board with 2GB RAM on March 14, 2020, but what we got is a Cortex-A72-based board with 4GB RAM nine months early! I will temper my enthusiasm with the observation that the Cortex-A72 has out-of-order execution and is therefore susceptible to side-channel attacks.

One nit: I don't like the type-D HDMI connectors -- they can get pretty loose with careless handling. I'd rather have a single type-A connector. But this is not a deal breaker. All I have to do is

sudo apt-get install fs-uae

and this is my new Amiga.

@bison

I was hoping for newer WiFi standard ... Also, no heat sink on the cpu means they didn't bump up the clockspeed as much as they could have and just used the die shrink to improve efficiency.

Perhaps a "C" version will come out on the next Pi-day...

Very cool.

Makes things like Tabor, x1000 and x5000 even more embarrassing than they already are though.

On the plus side, it could make for a fantastic value AmigaOS compatible machine, especially now that AROS has 680x0 binary compatibility for ARM.

Quad core (with all cores active) AmigaOS software compatible machine, brand new, available everywhere, starting at $35,... yes please

And it's not too far away either (in the grand scheme of things)

@fishy_fis, @all

Yes, I had hoped to enjoy these features with my Rock64, but alas it still has no Fedora support, at least not with usable video. Why Fedora? Thought I might give Eclipse (natively) on ARM a try, but no go. Maybe with the Pi4B.

I hope there is some way to disable the wireless, ideally in hardware.

@OlafS25

Yes, the Pi4 makes AROS on Pi and even more attractive option. AROS desperately needs a reference system, and this would be an excellent choice, since it will be in production until at least 2026.

This.

Hardware like this was made for hobby systems like AmigaOS. I still can't fathom out why effort is not being put into making AmigaOS 4 run on ARM.

How many hundreds of thousands of pounds are sunk into x1000 and x5000, only for them to break even at the most?

Ditch the PPC, pay someone to port to ARM and off you go. Bundle deals of Pi + AmigaOS to relive your youth, or get the thing into schools.

Anything, apart from the dead-end PPC.

Maybe AROS is the only sensible way forward for AmigaOS at this point.

Yep.

I can't think of a single possible and most of all reasonable thing that might make more business sense than developing an OS for an outdated, extremely expensive, scarcely available hardware instead of supporting one that sells what, I'd guess in the order of 100 times any AmigaOne ever put on the market?

As I've stated multiple times, the Amiga has always excelled at the low-end.
This does NOT mean a more powerful hardware should not exist, it just means you should build a base first ( = cheap platform!) and only then try to expand towards the more expensive/performing models.

You forgot few zeros from that number considering that by last december Raspberry had sold 23 million units. That's on same region than C64 and Classic Amigas combined.

Nope, I was just trying to be conservative.

I had absolutely no idea about the sales figures of the Raspberry Pi, and by the way that's an impressive number if you ask me!

Nor I myself.

Ben Hermans wrote this about 18 months ago:

I am not saying that an ARM port would be a small feat but it is certainly well within the realm of possibility provided we grow a sufficiently large userbase first AND there is an overriding reason to do it.

https://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=42257&forum=33&start=80#806041

Two things I don't get:

1. How can you grow the user base *before* you port to a competitive architecture?

2. It seems to me that PPC on the desktop having all four legs up in the air is in itself an overriding reason to do the port.

Anyway, my questions for Steve to ask both Hyperion and MorphOS are the same: what about a RPi port?

My thinking is, between AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, and AROS, whoever get up and running on the RPi4 first wins.

OS4 port to PPC took 3 years until public pre-release (with many parts still 68k and running under slow interpretive emulation). Our community (I mean developers, not mere users) was much stronger back then (2004). There is no manpower and resources to undertake this effort once again. Sure, if UAE is enough for you, you may enjoy your Pi right now. Other rather prefer better compatibility of the current solutions.

Depends on workload. Ón Linpack single precision 443%, File compression 60% and sysbench 50%. In week or so there will be loads of results on openbenchmarking.org when end users start to recieving their Pi's.
