@Turrican3

A HAL helps but Drivers would be the big hang up

Michal Schulz is working out a way to use the same binary blobs from Broadcom as Linux uses.

The dark side of Pi, alliteration not withstanding.

Fortunately the Raspberry Pi Foundation are doing what they can to make Pi as open as possible. In the interim I hope Michal is successful in finding a way to use these blobs.

I don't recall him saying that.

@terminills

Most of it is probably done by the Broadcom SoC. The stage 1 boot loader is is loaded from ROM, and stage 2 from the SD card. There used to be a stage 3 boot loader, but it is not longer required. So the stage 2 blob is the only one that is an issue, and as far as I know it is not OS-dependent, so it might work without change.

On the other hand, I could be completely wrong about this.

@terminills

It was his way to get USB drivers when those aren't even open on the Pi.

Pretty sure you're wrong but I will let Michal clarify himself.

Phoronix benchmarks:

Initial Raspberry Pi 4 Performance Benchmarks

Takeaway: It's a lot faster than the Pi3, but it has thermal problems in the official case. Something like this would probably work better:

@TiredofLife

Do you have the case as well? This seems like a good option.

@Rose

Does that actually exist in the real world?

@Rose

I'd like to see the cooling stats with one of those.
Looks like it might work well.

Cheers

This could be the basis of adding cross-compilation using Bebbo's GCC implementation along with parallel builds once updated for newer Pi models. I think the original uses the Pi Zero. The guy that forked the repo on Github wants to do this with a RasPi Compute Unit.

@bison

I've seen that video before.
What I'd like to see is the stats for the case Rose showed above.

Cheers
