This video of the Amiga Inc. offices circa 2001 was posted today! Looks like the sort of wannabe company that I always thought it was to be honest. A few Amiga mouse mats here and there and far to many 'Get Boinged!' posters as to be healthy I like to think that the receptionist is Googling the Amiga's history to work out where the temp agency has sent her! Sad, sad, sad,,,,

... almost makes all the OS4.x nonsense justified! They seem to be talking about AmigaOne hardware that runs Workbench 3.1 and up until AmigaOS 4 was ready! That sounds like absolute bull to be honest unless they were running it on Phase5 cards at that time!

After all, that was what "OS4" was originally about (3.9), and what Amiga Inc contracted Hyperion to develop...

@BigD

Why do you say a wannabe company? Looks like pretty much any standard company cubeland to me. Doesn't look much different than any of the handful of places I have worked over the years. Not every company bleeds cash on their buildings and trappings like Apple does..

I do agree with you however, regarding the Get Boinged posters though. Way overdone!

(Never liked the stupid posters in the first place)

since there have been no product to be really proud of, this gaping hole had to be stuffed with uninspired boing ball merch and presumably encouraging statements .. no wonder.

Standard company cubeland always reminds me of Dilbert. In the UK things are a bit more open plan. You can feel someone's eyes on you across the office. It seems in the US you have a little more privacy.

Not anymore. Now big business has decided that open spaces are all the rage and it absolutely SUCKS. Even Managers have zero privacy in today's companies and even though it has already been proven that these open layouts cause a DROP in efficiency and no one likes them they continue to roll them out anyway.

CHEAPER

And of course nothing else matters..

The only BS was that there was working hardware. The original AmigaOne was intended to be a board that plugged into the A1200 and would have provided the AGP, 6 PCI slots, SDR RAM and a CPU slot for G3 based cards. At the time Eyetech couldn't get suitable north and south bridges in small quantities and that would also need custom logic to interface the AmigaOne to the A1200. For this reason they tasked Escena with designing a the board along with the custom chips needed to make it work I assume they would have used CPLDs. At least one prototype board was produced but Escena was never able to deliver the chips required to make it work and it ended up being shelved in favour of the Teron boards from MAI Logic.

When Peter and I arrived, we didn't know where to find the company. We asked some people walking by, who turned out to be Microsoft employees in the next building! They didn't know, either. We had to explain to them what Amiga was! With Microsoft next door and Phillips across the street, we figured out that Amiga, Inc had to be in the building that was in front of us. We walked in and looked at the building directory. Amiga, Inc was on the second floor.

Gary Peake was especially welcoming to us. I was surprised that only few people were working at their desks. Where were the others?

Later, we went to look inside the Amiga school bus, but unfortunately I didn't take any video of its insides.

Well that, and the completely stand-alone “Pegasos” AmigaOne from Bplan. They also had a license.

I love stories like this of the post-Commodore era. Nearly all the tales from 1999 through today are about fighting, so anything about what people were actually doing -- whether at Amiga, Inc., H&P, Hyperion, or elsewhere in the Amiga universe -- is terrific. Please keep sharing!

Maybe you'd be interested in talking about some of your travels at AmiWest this year? Could make for a great presentation!

I rather wonder what those ppl that were actually present actually did all day long?

Thanks for providing the video.

Well two of these companies were actually doing something at one time.

Brian Bagnall reportedly considered writing a book about the Amiga era after the Final Years but Kickstarter stipulates that "books" must consist of more than one page of combined text and/or illustrations.

@ne_one

Accessories Boing Mouse, Boing balls -> Amiga Inc (most likely rebranded china products).
AmigaDE (Intent + sdk) on top of Linux workstations -> TAO Group.
AmigaAnyWhere (intent runtime) on mobile phones.
AmigaOS3.5 -> Haage & Partner
AmigaOS3.9 -> Haage & Partner

CD from Haage & Partner
* AmigaXL (UAE on QNX) -> Haage & Partner
* Amithlon (UAE on Linux) -> Haage & Partner

AmigaONE (the accelerator) -> Escena (failed)
AmigaONE (The computer) -> Eyetech (proxy for MaiLogic)
AmigaOS4.0 -> Hyperion Entertainment.
AmigaOS4.1 -> Hyperion Entertainment.
AmigaAnywhere2 -> Amiga Inc (not based on Intent)
AmigaOS4.1 Final -> Hyperion Entertainment.
AmigaOS3.1.4 and update 3.1.4.1 -> Hyperion Entertainment.

Some type of deal was made with QNX, don't know if it was Amiga Inc or H&P.
(see umisef reply...)

Amiga Inc did something, mostly getting other (sub-contractors) to do stuff for Amiga Inc, what was failure here is the lack commitment to combine technologies. Way did not Intent get ported to AmigaOS4.x and OS3.x it ended up being a obscure Linux thing, that fail to be a success on Linux because people and developers already had Java. Then came .net (c#) and mono for Linux. And mobile industry moved all to arm, with success of Android mobile operating system. And standardisation on Java made Intent (AA/DE) irreverent.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Nice list.

Allow me to nitpick about a few spelling mistakes (since the list may be copied and repeated, it should be as correct as possible).

The company that ran the OS 3.5 and 3.9 projects is Haage & Partner (not "Hagge").
"Amitalon" should be Amithlon.
"MiaLogic" should be MaiLogic.

And a little more speculative: One could question whether Amiga Inc. actually set in motion each of the projects AmigaOS 4.0, AmigaOS 4.1, AmigaOS 4.1 Final and AmigaOS 3.1.4(.1) separately, or they just let Hyperion Entertainment run those decision process(es) on their own.

Best regards,

Niels

This sounds more like the 'Escena AmigaOne' to me:
http://www.bambi-amiga.co.uk/amigahistory/amiga1pics.html

Well, AOS4 should have consisted of an AOS3.9 (AOS3.5?) running in emulation on a PPC, like it was announced in 1998 by Escena:
https://www.haage-partner.de/amiga/misc/h_new98e.htm

---

The sad thing behind Amiga Inc. was their disinterest in all things 'Amiga', except the brand name, the customers and game developers.

That's AmigaXL. AmigaOSXL was the combination of AmigaXL and Amithlon

Quote:

Apart from the spelling(s), calling Amithlon a Haage & Partner project is questionable at least. It was a third party development, originally slated to be released through Amiga Inc until Juergen Haage threatened to speak out about the lack of OS development if that happened.

Quote:

To the best of my knowledge, neither. There was some discussion during the Gateway days to host a "new AmigaOS" on top of QNX, but that fell through (supposedly due to some unwise behaviour by Fleecy).

And while you'd think Haage & Partner had obtained a license for AmigaXL, everything I have ever heard suggests they simply re-packaged the free-for-non-commercial-use QNX. Which is odd to include in the commercial AmigaXL...
