Amiga X5000 advice needed

I'm considering buying an Amiga X5000. I really like the look of them, seems great that a new Amiga can still be bought.

Just wondering how compatible it is for PC/Windows software?

I know that you can run MorphOS and Linux on there. Does that allow some PC based software to run?

Not at all, It does not run windows software.

But if you like to emulate some MSDOS games there is version of DOSBOX that work on AmigaOS4.x

Only if the game or software is open sourced for the most part, and if someone has spent time making sure it works on AmigaOS. ID Software has released a lot there games, there are also ScumVM that runs lot adventure games. and DOSBOX.

Thanks. As much as I want one, I'm not sure I can justify the price if I still need to have a windows PC as well

I think you find a lot of your answers here:

https://www.amigaos.net/

A lot of software it support can be downloaded for free.
(the catch is that the software comes without support, and granites)

http://os4depot.net/

Using AmigsOS is like stepping into a different world, different software different ways to do things.

Looks like the X5000 is not the right computer for you.

Many of us are waiting for the A1-A1222, which should be much cheaper (probably under 500 EUR), but there is no known release date yet.

In the meantime, you can try WinUAE as it supports even AmigaOS4.x used on the AmigaOne computers. It may be slow, but you will get some (cheap) experience with this kind of OS before buying expensive hardware.

And of course...

Welcome!

The official name is AmigaOne not Amiga.

It's not compatible with actual Microsoft Software.

Don't expect that an Amiga or an AmigaOne computer can fully replace a Windows PC.

Well, it tends to be easier if you already have a PC. But, there is Linux if you need a more up to date browser which works better. It will just get annoying if you need to reboot into another OS to use that.

@Hypex

People would need the patient of a saint to work like that but at least it's an option. A Linux Virtual Machine solution ala Parallels/VM Fusion on MacOS would be ideal. Make it so developers

I've thought about that kind of thing. I think OS4 would need to be run under Linux. There is already that QEMU build of the Sam and in future it could possibly run close to native speed on a Power 9.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Thanks for the info. I’m still considering it.

The only pc gaming I really do is through steam, it’s a shame that won’t work with Linux

@newton26

You asked about compatibility with Windows #1:

Emulation/virtualising is nice in business and at home 10+ years ago imho. But basicly you can do everything / most things with a cheap laptop or desktop machine and Windows (or Linux) these days.
The same with MorphOS, it runs great on a cheap Mac, like the mini G4 and MorphOS supports the machine very well.
The disadvantage is that you have more machines on your desk :(

If you can't justify a new X5000, maybe a used AmigaOne 500 of X1000 is an option, it is slower but the 500 is half the price.

@newton26

My personal Amiga plans/dreams/hopes/goals:
-get SAM440ep for better working condition for AOS4, then see if it is enough for my AOS4 needs
-get MorphMini for better working condition for MorphOS, then see if it is enough for my MorphOS needs
-set up classic machines for nostalgia needs

-use RDesktop or VNC to use windows apps from Amiga/Morph side (connection to cheap i3/8GB/SSD PC or to Win10Tablet)
-use MorphBookG4 for mobile MorphOS need
-use Win10Tablet with UAE for mobile AmigaOS3 needs (AOS4 in cosideration)
-test AEROS on RPi3, to see if it's usefull

...

There most certainly is a Steam client for linux - and you can run Windows only games on Linux, through Steam, via Wine.

I think it would be possible to use Linux on the X5000 to run Wine.
So you maybe can achive Windows compability. You cant expect wonders if it comes to perfomance. So I guess, no Assasins Creed here ;)

That's some True Amigan™ level advice. Wine doesn't emulate CPU so number of software you could run with it on X5000 is pretty much 0.

I am just speaking to Linux - Steam - Wine in general. I am not saying to rush out an get an X5000 for this purpose... no no sir. I just wanted to set you straight on Linux steam support.

@Debaser

Maybe you need to read this before suggesting Wine.

https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=6191

Form what read it is possible but it runs slowly and not really useful.

Anyway I don't get way anyone buy computer that was made for running AmigaOS, but instead run Linux to emulate Microsoft software on it, somehow that too me sounds like a really bad idea.
