| From OS News: Amazon, Apple, Google, Zigbee Alliance and board members form working group to develop open standard for smart home devices.
Remember when this was being touted as the next big thing for Amiga? _________________ Fred Booth ======================================== A500, A600, A1200 c/w Mediator and 030 AmigaOne and OS4.1 Mac LCII, G4 Powermac running OSX + Amigakit and MorphOS 3.0 Dell Mini 10 Netbook running IcAros and AmigaForever+Amikit+AmigaSys 2006 Macb |

No, I don't remember this.
Do you have any links or could you some sources? |

There aren't going to be links as the internet was not born yet... But I remember they were touting the Amiga for home automation... About the time they were talking about Amiga VR..
Neither went anywhere since the platform died..

Nice find with that old article. I have a bunch of X10 hardware and some Amiga software to run it hiding in my collection that I would like to use one of these days. Probably makes more sense to just use a Raspberry Pi though at this point in time. _________________ Amiga! | We have Hollywood, that part is covered. Now we need a board that can use the serial port to control outputs. Xorro may work for this also.

I've been trying to find links but no joy.
I think it was around the time Gateway 2000 bought Commodore or sold Amiga.
I seem to remember it being talked about in one of the British Amiga magazines of the time. I suppose it could have been part of the blurb that Fleecy Moss and Bill McEwen came out with. Last edited by OldAmigan on 21-Dec-2019 at 11:25 PM.

I used the very nice software from David Dean of Santa Monica
called AMI-X10.
Got it in 1987 at a user group meeting (LAUUG)
Sadly, my x10 hardware is in the garage some where?

Amiga Active has an article on Inet Dial so you may be thinking of that. I don't know which issue it was but the article may be on AMR if it got scanned.

Yes, I found that site and it looks pretty good. It's pretty modern and uses Hollywood, though.
I was thinking of probably what folk have mentioned above.

| It's easy to connect with an Arduino. That should provide you with all you need. _________________

Using RPi is great for Home Automation! I'm planning a Home Automation project based on the RPi co-processor by Eriond and Niklas..

I'm not sure how beneficial that "PCHIP" initiative really will be for the home automation field, the news release puts a bit too much emphasis on Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant, all of which requiring internet access and voice recognition processing on their respective servers.
What I really get from that press release is that they don't know how to interface with the existing technologies and instead want to replace the existing technologies by making the manufacturers adopt a new open source specification to make it easier for themselves to interface with their proprietary voice command systems, IMHO it's nothing more than a self-serving effort to generate more revenues by letting others do all the work for them.
Corporate bottomline aside, it wouldn't hurt if most new "smart home" devices follow the same standard with proper security measures built in, as they are sorely lacking at the moment, but I really don't think any of the big companies involved should ever be in charge of defining such standards.
Based on the history of Apple and Google. I predict that we'll just end up with landfills full of devices declared "obsolete" every six months as they roll out version xyz of their home control software. I may be exagerating a bit but that's where I think it will be headed.

I still use X10 modules to this day with a CM11a serial interface and they get the job done quite well.
I also use Arduinos, RPis and ESP microcontrollers via serial and WiFi to obtain sensor data that the X10 protocol can't handle.
Ultimately the X10 system is more convenient to control AC devices while the rest are better for sensors and to control low power devices, but what ties it all together for me is the Amiga. I can't think of any other system that could make it simpler to interconnect these unrelated technologies and automate all of it.
Also, when it comes to controlling things remotely, having to go through the Amiga first can make it a lot more secure than having to blindly trust some unknown IoT server admin with critical controls like door locks or potential safety hazards like a heater
