Now where was all the news reports on this? I don't recall hearing about this until now. Given he made a major contribution to the personal computer market.

Yes, major contributions. I thought the same thing about Dennis Ritchie, who was overshadowed in death by Steve Jobs.

@RobertB

Very sad He was a true maverick in his field and he had the potential to beat IBM at there own game if Jack Tramiel had backed him to make a IBM PC-beater.

Why haven't the BBC covered this?!

Chuck Peddle was on of the PC inverters, most people here know this fact.

But for the broad public out there, he is just a name they didn't know.

The job of journalists is to inform. He life is newsworthy, especially so since he was badly treated (pretty much bankrupted in terms of losing his Commodore stock after legal proceedings etc) by Jack Tramiel despite basically building his computer business for him!

HERE is a good summary of his life though it seems to be written as an alumni piece by his university while he was still alive!

Quote:
Eventually, his success at Commodore came at odds with Jack Tramiel, the company’s hard-charging founder and president. Peddle was the young engineer getting all the attention, which, he suspects, rubbed the image-sensitive Tramiel the wrong way. The parting was not amicable, and Peddle later lost his Commodore stock in legal proceedings.

The nice hard working and humble guys like Jay Miner and Chuck Peddle get forgotten and publicly funded broadcasters should pull their finger out!

Now that is sad news

My first computer was a Commodore PET which was based on the 6502 Microprocessor which Chuck helped to design. It powered many of the 8-bit micros of the late 70s and early 80s including the Apple 1.

A few years later Chuck left Commodore (1981 I think) but he was one of the truly great pioneers of the early 8-bit microcomputer revolution. RIP Chuck

F. Faggin. Why? I don't see how that's a comparison to be honest? Chuck Peddle was one of the key creators of the desktop computer / home computer as a concept (Commodore PET) in addition to being a chip designer. If he'd have had his way he'd have entered the business market as well and who knows what he would have achieved.

Plus the Intel 4004 was used in calculators! It was the first commercially available microprocessor but unless you're a PC / Intel fanboy it wasn't that exciting other than being a 'first'.

His work powered half of home computers of the 70s and 80s. Great legacy hardly comparable to anyone else.
