| Hi, I bought an X5000 system from a previous owner. It only supports three file systems. I was trying to back up a partition with a GB of data onto an SD drive plugged into a USB port by adapter. I formatted the SD with FFS with long file names. I tried copying several times and it kept crashing partway though and said the drive wasn't validated and it stopped working. I almost gave up. I changed the file system on the SD card to NGF and it copied okay. This is encouraging. Is NGF available on any of the older AmigaOnes like the micro? And if not, will it be available? It seems more stable. Last edited by thinkchip on 28-Jan-2020 at 03:29 PM.

I use SFS on my MicroA1 and never had any issues. it is 15 years old now and still works like a charm. My only pain point is the non upgradable onboard video which is a bummer. _________________ µA1-C/750FX@800Mhz/OS4.1 FE up#1 A4000/CSPPC 060-233/146Mb/CVPPC /OS3.9 A3000/CSPPC 060/233/64MB/Prometheus w/ Voodoo3/ OS3.9 A3000/PIV, A3000T/PIV |

I want to be able to access the SD card with my micro. The SD card is my backup and will keep the computers synchronized. _________________ X5000 / microA1(OS4.1 FE U2) / CodeBench / Imagine / Blender Lightwave 2019 / Microsoft Visual C++ |

If you have the Enhancer package SFS/00 is included. SFS/00 works on the X5000 as well as the older machines . You may have to enable it in the Kicklayout file. _________________ Sam460ex : Radeon Rx550 Single slot Video Card : SIL3112 SATA card |

Sadly, the "full" version of NGFS that runs on any NG Amiga has not been released to the public yet.

If it crashes over USB and a change in filesystem prevents that then FFS must stil have unresolved bugs. Given it's nature it isn't considered the most efficient. Plus you have a big SD. I also use SFS format when backing up for Amiga transfers.
The orginal AmigaOne models aren't the only ones to miss out. NGFS isn't available on my X1000 in FE either. Somehow the X5000 has some public version exclusive to that hardware. At least with what is installed as standard.
You could try adding it to your Kickstart on the Micro but I don't know if it works. Or recopy as SFS. Or, since the X5000 would be rather fast, LhA archive the whole lot! |

I do have Enhancer and it did copy the SmartFileSystem file to Kickstart when I installed it. It didn't change kicklayout though. Installing SmartFileSystem was just a matter of adding a line to kicklayout.
I ended up with SFS/00 and SFS/02. I repartitioned the USB card with SFS/02 and copied the files again and I now have a backup. There might have been something going on with SFS/02 because there were a couple of lockups. I'm not sure that was the cause. I like NGFS. It seems very stable and worked well on the SD card. It copied all the files straight through with no problems.
I use "backupcopy" from OS4Depot and I really like it. I recommend it to people who need to synchronize their files. You can consider this a hearty endorsement. I haven't had any problems with it (that I know of. I haven't checked every file.) Last edited by thinkchip on 01-Feb-2020 at 01:53 AM.

No the installers don't tend to touch the Kicklayout. I suppose they could add a line in there. But managing the Kickstart should be done by system software to which there is none. It would be similar to anything managing a startup script. It would need to map it based on contents to allow editing. But, I always thought, the Kickstart should be managed by files in dirs anyway and not by one file. It's a bit rigid and slightly hard to manage automatically. But possible. In Linux there are config files and folders for this kind of thing.
I'm surprised you needed to add SFS in. I'm just used to my XE always having it. It's a matter of personal choice but I only use SFS/00. It's stable and supported in recovery. SFS/02 is good if you need 64-bit sizes. But has other limitations and not as stable as the early one which you possibly come across.
Thanks for the info on "backupcopy". I didn't know we had a native tool now. I tend to give up looking and go back to drag and drop. |

When I installed OS4 in my X5000 from the CD, it said SFS wasn't included because of licensing problems. Evidently SFS is licensed for the Enhancer package. All these legal thinks are pretty baffling. Last edited by thinkchip on 10-Feb-2020 at 04:45 PM.
