@outrun1978

Thanks very much for that advice, I didn’t realise the graphics cards were not supported, and I will follow your link for Linux.

Cheers.

Well on Amiga OS all the resource eggs have appear to have been put into the Radeon SI and Polaris based cards for the time being. In fact many of the upcoming goodies we are hearing may be forthcoming such as accelerated video and 4K and usage of the GPU past 256MB, will rely on a more powerful graphics card. The current Polaris 12 card i picked up this weekend has 4GB of Ram way more than the measly 512MB found on an ancient X1650 card.

The sweet spot i found across all three systems on the X5000 was with a Radeon HD4650 with Linux coming out the clear winner over the other two, but regardless of which OS you use, i feel its always going to be a trade off one over the other with whatever option you go for.

I bought the X5000 with the main intention of using it for AmigaOS 4, with the added bonus of it being able to run Linux and MorphOS on boot. I wasn't necessarily to fussed if MorphOS or Linux didn't have all the features, and I understand that the Amiga scene as a whole is a constant beta or work in progress so patience and a sense of humour are very much key to this hobby!

As it stands the X5000 feels a little bit of a missed opportunity here for all sorts of reasons and I too share TJ's frustration over the lack of a up to date browser in AmigaOS 4. Its the one thing that is stopping our great little hobby machine becoming that bit more useful.

@eliyahu

Hi, I have just tried to buy the USB distribution of Linux, and it says it is unavailable.
That might be because I am in the UK, but I don’t know.

@Swoop

There are also Ubuntu and Fedora Linux ports. Kernels are here:

http://www.supertuxkart-amiga.de/amiga/x1000.html

Though AFAIK installing it is still a bit complicated. To my knowledge there's no bootable installer aside from the Ubuntu Remix DVD. And like the X1000 must be added by hand to the firmware boot menu.

The Fienix distro is not for newbies. It's very customised and comes as a complete partition image. Suited to install on second HDD but should be fine installed into a partition. (Or imaged onto it.)

@Hypex

Thanks for that, really appreciate it.

@Swoop

Yes can be fun setting a new system up. Should be a good experience.
