Getting my Amiga

So, after years and years of sitting on the fence waiting I have an opportunity to get a used x5000 system. I will need to put it in a new case and I have some questions... Please bear with me. I have not actively used AmigaOS in over 25 years and have very minimal knowledge of the new OS or hardware.

Question 1: Do I absolutely have to have an optical drive installed and connected to a SATA port? The system I getting already has an HD with AmigaOS installed. But, what if I need to upgrade or do a reinstall? Does that require an optical drive, or can all the be done from a thumb drive? If an optical drive is needed can it be a USB connected drive?

Question 2: USB 3, I know the x5000 only has USB 2. Is there a USB3 card that is compatible with AmigaOS?

Question 3: Bluetooth. I do believe that there isn't Bluetooth on x5000. Are there any Bluetooth adapters that are compatible? Or, am i wrong and it already has it?

Question 4: Processor. I know from years and years ago that the plan was to be able to upgrade the processor. I've not heard anything since. Does anyone know if this is still planned?

Thanks, that's all for now. Will probably have more later.

@DFergFLA if you could find a PCI Bluetooth card, you could always write or port a Bluetooth stack and then write a driver for the card.

Probably the only reason there's no Bluetooth support is because nobody's actually bothered with it.

@DFergFLA

I looked into embedded Bluetooth stacks some time ago, I don’t remember way I stopped, maybe it was mplayer project that got in the way, or some thing else, I did get that far.

File transferee on Bluetooth stuck, sure you share internet over Bluetooth, but you just connect to wifi as well, using it as sound card that can be cool, but audio quality over Bluetooth is not that good from experience, kind defeat the point I think.

The X5000 can also run Linux. So you might consider a second harddrive with Linux installed and bluetooth / usb3 could work.

Thanks for the information. No Bluetooth is both surprising and a bummer. But, it's ok. I'll live and hope that it gets done before I retire in 20 years.

I really need to know about Question 1. I am looking at a nice case, but it doesn't have a place for an internal CD/DVD. So this one is really important for me to know at this time.

Again, thanks everyone.

There is no need to have an optical drive.
The system will boot just fine from usb.

Optical media is dead :)

1. The OS is delivered on an optical disc. So in order to boot from that in case you need reinstalling, or something is messed up and you just need to boot into a working environment to fix it on your HD, an optical drive is quite practical to have. But you can boot from an external one attached via USB, so you don't actually have to have one built in.

2. No USB3 support. Haven't heard about anybody working on it either.

4. I never heard about plans to make the processor upgradable. There are plans to market an X5000 model with a slightly faster, four-core processor (often called the X5040 or the X5000/040. That model is still only out in limited beta.

Best regards,

Niels

@nbache

When you register the os at the Hyperion site you also get the disc in iso format and that can easily be transferred to a USB thumb drive.

Wasn't there also a quite hefty licence fee with Bluetooth, which is just too much for companies/developers of our sizes?

It can be costly but as is suggest in PDF, you might be able use someone else’s license.

Of course, you can buy a USB Bluetooth dongle

Yes but it won’t work without a USB driver, and a bluetooth stack.
