aMozillaX was an quite old attempt to port the good old Mozilla browser suite to AmigaOS classic .. apparently the project had reached the point of having a basic gui and even being able to view web pages ..

Does anyone know more about this project .. who was exactly the author, why it was never progressed and.. is the source alive somewhere, atleast for the historical fun ?

My guess too slow to be useable.

I guess we need the Internet like it's 1999 to find out what it was like.

I don't recall this. But it was along time ago. So I may have read about it.

We know what happened to Timberwolf. But back then you could work on a web browser with a one man team. Maybe there was an update to Mozilla which rendered the AMozilla build obsolete again.

I don't remember this either. But I do remember Netscape 4.6. It was horrible.

For a while it was the only usable web browser available for Linux. It hung so often that I put an icon on my desktop to kill it. I imagine running it on Amiga, without memory protection, would result in a lot of reboots.

Mozilla was horrible. I remember it as being sluggish on my A1XE a couple of years later (on Linux). On a classic Amiga it would have been useless. It could have worked on Amithlon though.

Nice. Wonder if there is a download somewhere then or if someone has the files to upload.

Love those funky late 90's early 2000's Workbench setups! It screams "Hey look at me I have a 16 million colour RTG setup!"

Unfortunely not .. atleast it was never released neither as a source code ..
If someone know how to contact the author we may ask him, with some luck maybe his code still exists somewhere

@sTix

Well it work ok, fast computers, 180mhz - 200mhz PC’s at the time, it’s just most Amiga computers are in 25Mhz to 60Mhz range, yes there are some people who has over clocked, yes there are some people with Blizzard / cyberstorm cards, the MacOS version might run OK, its also uses chunky graphics.

Anyway moving on to the Timberwolf, at time this one was written the PC version was using 2D hardware accelerated graphics, the AmigaOS version was not. The odd thing about “Timberwolf” is only working on some filesystems, something I find really strange.

Hmm, very sad. Hopefully one day someone will find the source/binary on their hard drive or realised they uploaded it somewhere.

I couldn't find it after a quick Google but it must be out there somewhere.

Maybe they will see this thread you never know!

I'm not sure how legit this project was. I do remember some names associated with it sounded genuine, but their PR guy made Dammy look sane.

They did announce they would "try" to get licenses to port Shockwave and RealAudio-Plugins, then ta few months later they announced a feature list containing said plugins. There's no way that was true, period.

Also, the only evidence I know of that this thing even existed is those two screenshots, while they were already announcing they hoped to release "next week", IIRC.

Nice find, looks like there is a CVS repo maybe someone could try it?:

http://amizilla.sourceforge.net/cvs.html

I don't have a CVS client installed at the moment and/or a SourceForge account.

I think that was more of a umbrella for any effort towards porting Mozilla to Amiga rather than any particular initiative.

@Seaquest

I believe AmiZilla and aMozillaX were not related .. the AmiZilla idea come a bit later (around 2003 or 2004 if my memory serve me well)
There were even a bounty for it, bounty that later was dovolved to the Timberwolf project

Just compared to AmiZilla where no one saw anything tangible, this aMozilla seems existed atleast in the form of these 2 grabs ...
